Favorite Substance and Why?

Gents,

Off topic and just out of curiosity. Being a first-generation American with strong European roots, I have always found it fascinating which substances people use to get through the week, enjoy the weekend, wake up in the morning, or fall asleep at night. ESPECIALLY here in America. Probably because of the wide variety of lifestyles I have noticed. Especially in NYC. I am curious what your guys' favorite are? And no I am not referring to just ones that are deemed as hip or that sexily do not fit within the realm as being legal. Some anecdotes of things I have noticed whilst in finance:

  • One dude was so into tea that I am confident he had at least 3 different types every day for different moods and occasions. Black to wake up, green to ease the after lunch sugar crash, and cham to calm him at night
  • I've met more "unconventional"(I say that tongue in cheek because, and not to get political, but it's just pot lol) pot bros in finance than I would have expected. Many top performers I have met regularly enjoy a puff, almost every day, although, and not that I know for a fact, usually just at night.
  • One lady, I worked with had 8 coffees every single day. Without them, she was actually very calm and much more pleasant. And when I mean without, I mean <8... lol
  • A guy I knew swore by vitamins and would take One-Flew-Over-The-Coo-Coo's-Nest amounts of pills each day. He claimed they were all just vitamins and I really think they were but 20+ pills a day??
  • Another fella (this one is less unique) I know would work around 100 on average, then snort his brain out all weekend just to be alert enough to go out. This was especially fascinating because he was otherwise very health conscious. Almost never had more than a few drinks. (This one proved to be the least sustainable, as he developed or at least discovered that he had heart palps.)
  • And lastly, One person I had heard of, may be an urban legend, really did believe the Wolf of Wall St. mantra, whether inspired or not, Idk, but felt that "only 2 times a day were indeed rookie numbers". The funny thing was he worked as a quant at a top HF according to my buddy who went to school with him. And no he did not leave the office to record those above rookie numbers...
  • And lastly, a kid I worked alongside a few years ago at an internship at a European bank, would have ridiculous amounts of sweets each day. It was not uncommon to see him have 3 or 4 bags of M&Ms. Weirdly enough he was one of the smartest and leanest (physique wise) guys I have met while in industry. Just quite hyper when indulging... which was every day.

So what oddities have you guys noticed on a substance basis? Or what is your pref? This isn't meant to insult or be judgemental btw. Where I'm from it's a very much "you do you" mentality. Looking forward to some stories and hopefully laughs!

Cheers

If I have to pick a real la croix flavor, I would go with Berry.

Well I ate Xanax every day for five years. I started sometime around my senior year of high school and ended after my 'ternship at a BB in NYC ended and I was so relived to have not gotten an offer. I'm not sure what I did in the intervening five years, I think I got a degree from a state school...

There was plenty of coffee and modafinil as well, to get me up in the morning and keep me up throughout the day. I know lots of other bankers who use modafinil, both at work and after work. Vitamins and tea sound like a placebo to me.

But the ultimate substance is ice. Chewing ice. I chewed ice all 10 weeks like a lunatic. Chomp, chomp, chomp, chomp, chomp >>> get up and walk over to the ice machine, ERRRRREEREGEGEGLPLUNKPLUNKUNK >>> swipe card > open door >>>> smile at other 'terns as I walk back to desk >>> chomp, chomp, chomp, chomp, chomp ICE ICE BABY

Ha, I cringed a bit picturing this. Ice chewing is pretty hard on the teeth. There's a bit of a risk that you could chip/break your teeth if done often enough, but it seems that hasn't been the case with you. Carry on!!

  • Coffee (extra espresso) - I will have in the morning to give extra boost
  • Performix TCP - If I need the extra push to get through studying for certification exams or anything else that requires laser sharp focus and heightened ability to recall information and memory

I highly recommend the Performix TCP for anyone who needs that extra push. It's a nootropic and truly increases your cognitive ability. If you are studying for an exam you will be able to sit in front of your computer and focus for hours. It helps with being able to retain/recall information as well. Good stuff.

    • 1
Feb 3, 2018

I'm curious about Performix TCP and that whole category of brain vitamins... Do they give you a feeling that is similar to some sort of stimulant? I've always been skeptical about those kinds of supplements and the Amazon reviews for them partially back me up... but still, now that I'm on the (painfully) clean and sober track in life I want there to be something that can give me an edge. Is it like coffee without jitters? Or adderall without the rush? I'm curious... thanks

Feb 3, 2018

Everyone is different so if you try something new I would recommend trying in small portions at first. I personally haven't experienced any side effects and even so, I will only buy several individual packets (maybe 5-10 servings at a time if I need it) rather than an entire carton. Also I am active with working out and staying fit so I assume that could be a factor of not experiencing any side effects.

I have never tried any other cognitive supplements other than coffee so I don't really have any frame of reference.

But let's just say when I was studying for the CPA exam and it was close to my test date, I was literally burnt out and the information was just not sticking. I would sit staring at the computer screen and coffee no longer kept me awake.

I bought the stuff from GNC and used it the next day. Sat through an entire 3 hour practice test and killed it. I was like zoned into the computer screen and was able to recall information on questions I normally would have gotten bogged down on.

It's a good clean feeling too, no jitters whatsoever. Just don't take it on or before lunchtime unless you plan on staying up late.

It totally reminds of the movie Limitless, without any negative side effects.

I just buy individual packets though because I don't want to become dependent on it, not that it has addictive qualities or anything, just would rather use it short-term than having it to use and not need it.

What time do you go to sleep and wake up at in order to get a lift in before work while still maintaining a relatively healthy amount of sleep?

    • 1
Feb 6, 2018

If I go to bed before midnight that's basically a guarantee I'll be going to the gym the next day. 2am is usually my cutoff, but sometimes if I had a really bad week or two and need to catch up I'll skip a day even if I'm home pretty early. Usually wake up at ~6:50 so definitely running a deficit but then I sleep in / nap more on the weekends.

I've always been lucky to not need a ridiculous amount of sleep otherwise I don't think this would be that sustainable.

This really rings true. Health IS wealth, and a fat salary will never make up for waking up depressed and in pain every day. It's common knowledge that plenty people in the industry frequently use ADHD medications, namely Adderall/Vyvanse, Ritalin, etc. (with or without a prescription, but in the States it's not exactly hard to get one) to keep them sharp for 12+ hours on end. In the short term, sure, this is probably safer than blow or 3-4 Red Bull's a day (and also much more potent), but that's also assuming you're consistently taking it the way your doctor prescribed you to. For many people, however, when 80+ hour work weeks get involved, your life will be anything but consistent and you'll be abusing it in the long-term (>1 year), leaving you an empty shell on your way to a nuclear burnout. As hippy as this sounds, nothing beats enough sleep (6+ hours, since 7-8 might be unrealistic for many), regular exercise, a healthy diet AND as mentioned above, plenty of water everyday (actually makes a huge difference, try sticking to at least 2L a day and you'll notice the benefits quick). Besides, if you're making a good salary, why not treat yourself with a membership to a nice gym, drop $3k+ on a proper latex / memory foam mattress and pillows (I mean you sleep at least 25% of your life anyways, may as well make it nice), and one of those subscription services where they send the ingredients necessary to a customized meal plan every week. Lastly, assuming you live <30 minutes from work and the weather allows it, take a walk to work (don't wanna promote cyclists in cities like New York, they kinda suck).

In college I was huge on study drugs. I've always been a closet nerd so to me there was no Eupohria like popping an Adderall, drinking a coffee, throwing in a fat lip of Copenhagen straight and fucking around with economic models all night. Eventually I stopped lying to myself and acting like I was taking them for utility and came to grips with the fact that it was just plain recreational drugs abuse, so I knocked it off.

I also hate smoking pot but once a year or so I'll do it anyway and I feel like it does make me a lot more sensitive to things that are bothering me in life and emotions I've been holding in.

I'm pretty pedestrian:

  1. Coffee. Nothing fancy: light roast when I need more caffeine, dark roast when I want more flavor. Morning and early afternoon.
  2. Seltzer water. I drink Polar Seltzer throughout the day (various flavors).
  3. Alcohol. Beer or whisky (peaty scotches preferred). A drink or two at night.

I've also developed a sweet tooth within the last few years. Cookies, pies, cakes, cupcakes, donuts, danish, scones, truffles, chocolates, etc. Can't get enough. Luckily I've managed to avoid becoming a fatass through willpower and working out.

what do the coca tea and microdoses of psilocybin do for you?

Mar 22, 2018

coca tea is a nice bump in energy, though my supply is out so i'm back to coffee

psilocybin micro dose... i'll do it in the evening and go for a long walk. get the nice body high and my mind is very aware / clean which allows me to creatively work through big ideas / topics circling in my head.

A nice high from marijuana can do this too, but mind is always a big foggier vs mushrooms

What is the answer to 99 out of 100 questions?

Feb 6, 2018

First thing in the morning: 1 scoop ON preworkout, one scoop ON Amino Energy (to kill the crash), and some DAA to get angry (also I have low test)

Post gym: brotein shake- protein, creatine, flax meal, hemp heart, cocoa powpow, Coach's oats, peanut butter powder scoop, and flavor shits like naners and strawberries. I might chug a Yakult if my stomach hurts, or pop a moda if I'm tired or have a lot to do that day. Only halfsies though, a full one will make me super productive but then I'm kinda burnt the rest of the week.

Get to work: Coffee, zipfizz, costco 5hr energy thing, or amino energy. I add a little piracetram if I need to think that day, and L-Theanine if I'm getting the shakes. At this point I'm usually feeling real good because I bike 7mi into work and take a cold shower after arrival.

During work: maybe a refill, but mostly the coldest damn water I can get. If I eat a big lunch (GAINZ) I'll have another dose of caffiene to avoid the food coma.

Home: Chamomile tea, an advil or two if sore, and either melatonin and if I'm actually gonna get 8hrs of sleep some nyquil too. Maybe some DAA for dem sweet dreams, or if I know I'm going to be shirtless in front of a hottie within a week.

Weekends: It varies so much I can't even try to say. It's safe to say I drink an average of 20 alcoholic drinks if I'm drinking that weekend, and some caffiene to keep me awake.

I used to be super into the multi-vites, but that's slowed down over time I guess. I'll probably start that up again soon.

I play around with different things and cycle frequently, my current setup has too much uppers and downers to be a long-term solution, but it feels good for now so I fucks wit it.

We had two bags of grass, 75 pellets of mescaline, five sheets of high-powered blotter acid, a saltshaker half-full of cocaine, a whole galaxy of multi-colored uppers, downers, screamers, laughers... Also, a quart of tequila, a quart of rum, a case of beer, a pint of raw ether, and two dozen amyls. Not that we needed all that for the trip, but once you get locked into a serious drug collection, the tendency is to push it as far as you can. The only thing that really worried me was the ether. There is nothing in the world more helpless and irresponsible and depraved than a man in the depths of an ether binge, and I knew we'd get into that rotten stuff pretty soon.

    • 5
Feb 7, 2018

First of all, huge on water. Drink at least a gallon a day without fail. Feel like shit unless I'm aggressively hydrated.

Since I've started working my caffeine intake has skyrocketed. Usually end up doing a wake-up cup on the way to work, mid-morning cup, two espresso shots post-lunch and a large Starbucks in the late afternoon. No pre-workouts though. I can't have too much at one time, need to space it out or I crash hard.

In terms of fun drugs, I basically stick to booze and blow. I try to have relatively few nights out but make them count. Coke is my bad habit. I just feel so fucking nice. Good thing I don't have an addictive personality or I'd be fucked. I do try to separate the nights though to reduce heart risk and because quite frankly drinking is a waste when you're nice and cheesed. Going out like once a week, I don't suffer too many adverse health or productivity risks from occasional coke and binge drinking either which is nice.

Haven't smoked for a couple years because I started feeling really dumb and slow, and I will never try psychedelics because I know way too many people who've had bad experiences.

Feb 9, 2018

For those who want to plummet to the bottom of the pile, following the advice of those snorting and popping chemicals will get you there. And while you might be wiling to take that dive, there is a better way to climb to and stay on the top of the performance curve. Meditate. Theres' a reason the fictional Billions Bobby a/k/a Axe hedge fund guru meditates. It's been proven to build the part of the brain that enables you to keep your cool in the face of market jitters or stress. So if you want to keep your frontal brain in the game and to build brain structures that keep you smart and enable resilience, meditate.

Honestly, I'm a big fan of big pharma. Addy, oxy, and xanies. Love em.
I'm definitely a fan of pot as well. About 2-3 blunts a day.
I like to do acid once or twice a year. I find it nice to take a look at things in a different view. Maybe it's artificial, maybe not, but it is usually a meditative experience for me.

I've kinda grown to hate alcohol tbh. Barring some wine at a nice dinner or maybe a few beers, not much of a drinker anymore.

Is brilliant how many substances I ever tried in order to go through tough exams, internship or for gym only.
To be fair, I would say that it mainly depends on what is your actual goal. I mean, if you want extra-pump, energy or something else.
Anyway, you shouldn't go without vitamine B6 and B12.
Other mix are given by beta alanine, niacine, arginine, citrulline, rhodiola, over the classic caffeine, thaurine and guarana. Also, you can get tribulus in order to increase your libido level.
All of these are natural and cannot be addictive, although you know, you can use them for a limited range of time

wtf? do these harm your body? This is not fair if you take it in college. They make you smarter and outperform other students. Is this why a lot of people get higher grades than I do? They hack, cheaters

Adderall. Kids are popping them like candies these days at most Ivys, so I'd imagine getting a prescription is about as hard as buying alcohol as a minor.

It won't help you focus but a B12 supplement after lunch will keep you from hitting that mid-afternoon lull.

Mar 24, 2018

B12, caffeine, healthy diet, cardio/exercise are the best legals. Adderall or another derivative are legal with prescriptions that are insanely easy to get, and if you're a student, you probably know two dozen people with prescriptions. There are other illegals, but you'd have use the deep web/cryptocurrency/test it -- not worth it.

In all seriousness though, just workout and eat well for a week and see how you feel. It's probably more than enough, and you don't want to get hooked on any stimulants.

I'd recommend green tea extract (particularly the l-theanine). Personally works well for me.

If we're talking legal, I'd recommend Modafinil. Do your own research, mod works differently from person-to-person.

Mar 24, 2018

When you're talking about prescription-strength stuff, I think you want to remember that the negative effects generally correspond with the positive effects. Also, everyone's body is different and could have a different response to the same substance. Adderall and modafinil can work great, but can come with a cost, especially if you're taking them consistently.

For natural/over-the-counter, I like Smart Caffeine (caffeine/theanine, I know lioncub mentioned the later above). I keep it in my briefcase and it gives me a boost without ever feeling jittery or over-caffeinated. CILTEP also works for me (ok as is, but great when combined with caffeine or Smart Caffeine), but I have noticeable negative effects if I take it too often, so I don't usually use it more than a couple times a week. It's also nice that it works all day.

Just keep in mind that there's no free lunch - supplements can give you that extra when you need it, but aren't a substitute for motivation, interest in what you do, etc.

Mar 24, 2018

That is why using Piracetam and Choline is so effective, research on longecity and you will see how beneficial these two are. These actually have a snowball effect and improve cognition over time instead of serving as a short term fix like a band aid (caffeine/adderall/etc.)

Mar 24, 2018

From my experience with nootropics, Alpha Brain has to be the best. It provides a non-jittery focus for hours on end with zero side effects (slight constipation if taken without food). I even sleep better when I take it.

Mar 24, 2018

have to take more than a couple pills for alpha brain to work - not the most economical

Mar 24, 2018

Got terrible hives after 2+ days of no sleep and 200mg of Modafinil in my body. There is a risk of SJS (super gross), but it's rare. Otherwise, I'd recommend it.

Nitrovit works well. it is a nootropic so it's non-addictive and no side effects.

It ain't what you know, it's who you know

Mar 24, 2018

Dude dont take any pre formulated nootropics like alpha brain they are a waste of money and underdosed, the most powerful and safe nootropic is Piracetam, it is used to treat dementia in russia because it improves cognitions so vastly

Mar 24, 2018

caffeine pills. and caffeine in general. I think the best time to drink a coffee is right after lunch. When I wake up in the morning I'm already pretty alert.

Mar 24, 2018

Side question: For those of you who also lift weights, have any of you guys felt silly enough to experiment taking a pre-workout and NOT working out? i.e. for the purposes of getting an energy boost. This is probably a terrible idea.

I ask because I've tried various pre-workouts (Pre-Jym) that keep me absolutely wired, without jitters, for the rest of the day after the gym. This is probably not a sustainable / healthy long-term solution tho.

Mar 24, 2018

few do, myself included (pre-jym), and it makes perfect sense to do so

I take PWO for the gym and have actually heard of some people using it for work, so it can't be totally uncommon.

If you are planning on taking one, make sure it's focused on giving you energy and not a pump. A good example is the PWO's "Dr.Jekyll" and "Mr.Hyde" (names of actual PWO's btw). Dr.Jekyll has a lot of beta-alanine, which will give you a good pump in the gym but won't do much for your energy levels. This is what you don't want. Beta-alanine will just irritate you and make you feel itchy all over if you're not using it to work out or if you take too much.

What you want is Mr.Hyde, which basically has a lot of caffeine in it to give you energy and no beta-alanine or other ingredients to give you a pump. The idea is to take a little of Jekyll and Hyde together if you're working out, but obviously you would just take the Hyde if for work. Just be advised that a serving of Hyde has over 400mg of caffeine I believe, which puts it at drinking around 3 cups of coffee. But you'll get a ton of energy.

Mar 24, 2018

Any suggestions for ones which work without caffeine? I'm very sensitive to caffeine and it gives me stomachaches - to the surprise of all my summer internship bosses, I am perfectly fine without it.

I'm literally snickering out loud in my office. What morons we've all been -- working 100+ hours a week, popping those mean nasty pills, pumping our bodies full of unnatural stimulants, when what we REALLY should do for maximum performance is to leave the office early to make sure we're getting our 7-8 hours of beauty sleep.

Know what? I'll just walk out right now.

Don't worry, Mr. Boss Man, when I roll in tomorrow with clear sparkling eyes and a bounce in my step, you won't care that none of your changes got turned and that you now have no product to show the board of X company. I'll just start in with my newly-tuned productivity and get it done twice as fast.

Oh wait... except I have to get to the gym by noon in order to get my natural high and keep my brain in top condition. Do you think the board could just push their meeting back a few days? We can just explain to them that we'll get started on that work product as soon as we've completed our ping-pong matches and pre-bed routines.

Love it. This made my day.

Lol. I don't condone encouraging taking drugs. But I admit this made me laugh.

Mar 24, 2018

As for the exercise portion -- I work out 5-6 days a week and I tell you that it does NOT give you the superhuman powers :) that Ritalin / Adderall does -- it's not even comparable no matter what research is presented. Sure these things help an overall healthy balance of life, but they don't replace the advantages that 'pills' provide for me.

Mar 24, 2018

Can someone please tell me what the actual side effects of using adderall? I use it quite often and it works great, the only real down side for me at least is that I'm a but anti-social on it, just wanting to get my work done/not waste time.

It seems that the 2 main claims for people that oppose it are:
1. Its not safe, I dont want to use drugs
2. It puts people without access to adderall at a disadvantage

I can understand the puts people at a disadvantage part, although that is a quick fix if you have health insurance (not to difficult getting a prescription these days) and of course, just getting it from somebody else.

But whats the deal with the negative connotation of the adderall as a hard drug, like your injecting heroine or railing coke? Yes its a controlled substance, but how often do you see doctors prescribing daily doses of heroine to school children?

So back to the point, are there any real health side effects that need to be considered when using adderall?
