Former High School / College student here to answer questions

In the spirit of thanksgiving, I have decided to host a thread where you can ask all you ever wanted about middle school, high school, or the first 1/2 of college. Please feel free to ask away. Hope this will be helpful to the younger folk on this site

1) Should I take US or European history? 2) What's the most prestigious math class? 3) Will your sister go to prom with me? 4) If I am JV soccer captain, will this show leadership when applying to GS/MS/JPM?

  1. Both, take AP US and Euro, it looks better to have 2 classes for exit opps into top megaschools (Ivies, MIT, Stanford etc.)
  2. AP Calc BC, or if possible some advanced multivariable class if you're in a top HS group (Andover, Exeter, Choate, Deerfield, Thomas Jefferson, Stuyvesant etc.). However top megaschools are pretty flexible and sometimes coming out of a regular HS you have a better chance at HYP than if you were competing with 30 other 4.0 kids at Stuyvesant or Andover
  3. Only have a brother, is that OK?
  4. Helps for colleges but probably not 4 years later when everyone applying probably headed a team in HS

Does group matter for placement? I feel like if I'm in a goth/scrub group the girls there are ugly and in any case would rather go elsewhere for their needs, so I won't get much execution experience, should I try and lateral into the preppy douchebag or jock groups where the guys seem to be executing transactions with various girls all day long?

I ask because I know that when you apply to megaschools, they often ask you to list and describe in detail your execution experience. What if I don't remember all the exact details and nuances of why such a transaction took place. Will that be an issue?

@Gutshot -- those are not groups but rather people you hang out with. Almost all high schools are generalist in terms of "group" (aka no majors) unless you go to Thom. Jefferson/Stuy which are more analytical/execution oriented. Shoot for the best grades you can, a top-bucket kid from high school with good grades and recommendations is gonna do better at megaschool recruiting than a preppy kid from a good school with B+ grades and limited analytical experience.

Traditionally, groups that have placed well include lacrosse, squash, crew if you are good enough to get recruited, as well as first-generations and legacies

Can I get into Harvard/GS/KKR/Megan Fox if I have a lvl 99 Paladin and lvl 70 Night Elf (both with godly/uber items of course)? It shows commitment and a strong work ethic right?

A Paladin is a class and a Night Elf is a race. The two aren't mutually exclusive. You reached level 99 without realizing this very basic fact? Clearly you have no attention to detail -- your chances with Megan Fox are slim to none.

Though he may have a chance with WoW enthusiasts like Mila Kunis... but he'll have to appeal to her weird tastes, given she's with Macaulay Culkin.

Don't forget, getting to level 99 shows that you're willing to sit in front of a computer screen for hours on end doing repetitive tasks. I'm sure banks will appreciate that.

I'm currently doing some Research on the impact that joining a swim team has on the average student in a middle school. I would greatly appreciate it if you can help me with this research. Im collecting a graphical database of Junior high school male swimmers in their uniforms. You probably have tons of pictures,so it would be of great help to me.

thanks!!
