[Freshman] UBS PWM Internship
I had a phone call with a VP at UBS, and it went great. The VP said he would love to have my on board this Summer, and would get back to me after talking to the people at his bank (he told me it would be unpaid). My ultimate goal is to work in BB investment banking but I do go to a non-target so realistically I just want to work at a boutique investment bank or middle-market since BB is impossible.
I've been reading some older threads, and the general consenus is that PWM really holds no weight when it comes to IB recruiting. There are a couple boutique investment banks near me so should I just hold off on this "offer" (probably a very bad idea?), and just do everything I can to intern at a boutique? I don't want to be unrealistic but I really feel like if I can get the MD to take me on it will make me much more competative.
If you can secure a UBS PWM internship your freshman year you're sitting pretty
accept the offer then network with the boutique banks for an off-season internship in the fall/winter/spring
Yeah I'm confident I can secure this honestly. It's pretty exciting to try something new but I just want to put myself in the best position when the smaller IBs recruit on my campus. Would having the PWM internship help me standout?
Thanks!
definitely, especially freshman year you're already working in banking and not taking the common f500 route
aphenophilia hey man, I got ur PM but my account is too new. Basically, just hop on Google Maps, look up "Wealth Management" and try to find a couple of firms. Just aim for something like Merrill Lynch, UBS, etc. Go on LinkedIn, send a message to the VPs asking for a time to talk about your interests in PWM. It's really not that hard to get one of these internships, they won't turn down free work.
EDIT: If you wanna aim high (which you should) try to find a couple of small IBs nearby and do the like. Nothing wrong with trying especially if you go to a target/semi-target
Thanks
Good luck!
Yes – take it.
It'll be a great building block for the future as you're just doing this at a freshman summer, and will ultimately open more doors in the industry when you're looking for further opportunities. Unpaid sucks and PWM internships are more administrative than much else, but it's the first step. I came from a non-target as well and have since joined a BB, so make sure you network hard and push to what you want. It's not easy, but it's possible.
Lastly, UBS is still a BB bank, and the name does hold weight in the industry. Make sure you network while you're there and leverage your experience into landing a sophomore SA/etc at a BB or similar. You'll figure it out, just work hard and make people around you happy. They'll go to bat for you when the time comes.
Awesome! Again, I really hate getting ahead of myself (and don't want to sound entitled) but I figured the VP at UBS may know someone at the boutiques near by, and could leverage that for next Summer. I wouldn't bring it up anytime soon though of course.
Thanks!
bump. any more input?

Interview coming up. Anyone do a UBS PWM internship as a freshman? What were your responsibilities? What did they ask in the interview? They told me it would be very informal (no technicals, only personal / fit questions)
Congrats on landing that. I''m sure some people on here will be able to tell you about the program. How did you get the interview? Cold calling?
