Getting an internship with a hedge fund via a connection
Hey guys,
This is going to be a very weird question and y'all might even roast me, but I want to ask what my chances of landing an internship with a hedge fund via a connection are.
Here are the details: I'm a freshman at an Ivy and I have a connection with a MD at a small fund (couple billion in AUM and has several offices internationally) and I was planning on reaching out sometime to see if I could get an unpaid internship with the fund. My concern is whether or not this is exactly feasible: even if I'm unpaid I'm sure there are several things that would prevent the fund from being able to take an undergrad intern just like that.
I guess my question is, even if I have a connection, have the knowledge, and offer to work unpaid, would this fund be willing to give me some work to do and occupy space at their office this summer? For further reference, as far as I'm concerned they don't have any formal internship recruitment program.

Thanks for your response. Yeah you're I should have thought twice about how I described it. I want to mention that this "connection" is basically the son of an old family friend from way back when. I've actually never formally met this guy (he's in his 30s) but I've met his parents several times. I'm just skeptical if, like you said, he'll want to help me out and even if he does, what he can do.
