Hi all, I’m an incoming analyst working in IB next year, and I’ve recently become really interested in doing Infra PE. However, I’d imagine my coverage group (FIG) is not super well positioned for exits into the space. If infra PE is my next goal, should I try lateraling into a different IB group like energy/infra coverage? Is it possible to break into the space without an energy/infra background?

I know someone personally who exited from FIG IB to Infra PE so it's not impossible. The modelling skills you'll pick up in FIG are distinct from other industries as you probably already know, but not entirely dissimilar from infrastructure. If you made the transition you'd have to have a solid story and probably have to do some reading beforehand as you'll be behind the curve from an industry knowledge standpoint relative to an infra banker. Given how accelerated on-cycle recruiting is, you may not be able to lateral into a more relevant coverage group if that's the route you want to go down.
