Goldman Sachs
Hey guys,
Just wondering if anyone who has worked for Goldman Sachs might have any tips or "tricks" to get an internship there for the summer of 2019. I am currently a sophomore, so I know they won't give me one right now, just wanting to plan ahead.
Thanks,
Future ibanker
If you use the search bar / google you would certainly find what you're looking for... but since you're here Ill give you somewhere to start by trying to explain the process to get a first round interview.
Getting an IB SA first round interview is very similar at every bank. Obviously, varying in competitiveness (still competitive at any bank), but the same process. You either go to a target where that bank comes on campus, gives an information session (where they talk ab their bank and the internships they are offering), and has a "resume drop" where they then pick who they want to interview, or you go to a non-target and you need someone (ideally multiple people) that you have networked with and made a strong connection who will make sure your resume gets read (online applications are a black hole). Do some research to get a better understanding.
As far as how to make sure your resume gets read and you actually get an interview, the best way to think about the process is to see it as a "checklist" that you must meet every criteria to have a chance for someone to read your resume and want to interveiw you. Keep in mind, IB is so competitive that you could hit every mark on this list and have someone vouch for you and still not get the interview... the best you can do is make sure you have all these attributes and network hard so someone actually reads your resume. Heres a rudimentary/everything I can think of off the top of my head that banks really look for:
Killer GPA (at least 3.5+, preferably higher if at non-target/easier program)
Strong leadership positions & extracurricular involvement (varsity sport is adequate substitute for lack of club leadership)
Relevant prior experience - ideally IB/PE/HF/related internship going into Junior year
Demonstrated interest/commitment to finance (through clubs, coursework, prior internship, heavy networking, etc)
Good/interesting hobbies that bankers will hopefully relate to
**more relevant for BB/EB - a "wow factor" - something special that other applicants wont have that they will read and think "I want to meet this person, s/he sounds interesting and like someone I really want to work with"
Do some more research on topics above and remember like I said before, it's extremely competitive - you could be a perfect applicant on paper and not even get a first round. Keep your options open and don't think "GS or bust"
Thank you very much. Yeah I have been doing a lot of searching lately just wanted to get an opinion from these forums. Once again, I appreciate it.
Thanks a lot all this help is greatly appreciated.
