Help me choose a watch
Greetings Gentlemen,
I want to get a watch but struggling to choose, i am a PE associate in London if that helps…
I am currently looking at-
Rolex datejust/submariner but if you look at statistics they are becoming way too common these days, which is bit meh…
piaget polo/polo chrono but they seem like they would look good on old people but they look good though…
panerai luminor it looks way too sporty to go with a suit and look elegant….
Would love to hear suggestions with these and any new watch you think is good, also do you think steel bracelet will be better than leather? I already have 1 steel tissot and 1 leather omega…
how much do you think i should be spending on watch as an associate?
thanks
Go into stores and try them on…you’ve listed watches which are quite different to one another in size and style. If your wrists are big enough for a panerai chances are you shouldn’t buy a datejust, and if a datejust is more suited to your wrist you definitely shouldn’t buy a panerai. That aside I’d probably go for a sports model Rolex, timeless, versatile and value retaining watches you can’t go wrong with. If you don’t want to wait maybe have a look at Tudor, they also have some cool pieces and are more affordable.
Second this, Tudor is owned by Rolex, so admittedly a down grade on quality and less people probably know the brand, but still a great piece for the price. I have one currently, and my thought process for deciding was getting a solid watch, but one that isn't too flashy. I went with stainless steel model white face which looks great IMO, and I did not want to flirt with Rolex's, Omega's or other nicer brands so senior bankers weren't like who the fuck is this guy rocking a Rolex as a first year. If senior perception isn't a worry for you, I'd roll with a Rolex Datejust because of the simplicity of the design and the fact it will retain it's value, you aren't reselling a Tudor like you could a Rolex.
I am a big fan of Rolex, I would suggest the Submariner
Try a zenith defy skyline - cheaper than a sub and more accessible. Or Bulgaria octo finissamo
One thing you'll realise for rolexes is that there's a waiting list and if you don't spent, you're not going to get allocated.
I wear a jlc master geo - love it. Next one might be a ultra thin perpetual. Also on the waiting list for an AP RO and a VC overseas
The Octo Finissimo makes me moist.
Check out the Zenith Chronomaster Sport. Either you’ll think it’s a Daytona rip or absolutely love it. I’m in the latter group given the history between the el primero movement and it’s Daytona roots.
You won't get the retail experience with Rolex since everything is sold out. You can keep it in the Swatch family and consider a Glashutte Original SeaQ.
For a different look try the divers from Breitling or Ulyses Nardin.
Rolex GMT is the base of my collection. Depending on your budget there are different ones that may work. The Batman is one of my favorites without an obscene price tag. Also, an underappreciated watch in my view is the Jaeger LeCoultre ultra-thin. Understated, elegant like an IWC Portugeiser, but less common, if that's a factor. With the history, innovation, and the fact that Jaeger Lecoultre makes all their own parts still (pretty much the only ones that do), I am blown away that more watch guys aren't into these.
Their movement finishings aren't up to par until you get to their $50k+ price points (other than the Duometre family, which are ~$30k. The Duometre might be the only JLC I'd consider buying). None of their Reversos, Master Control, or other <$50k lines have hand finishing for their movements. They are as mechanically finished as they come, and look like a premium ETA movement. They also bloviate about how their watches go thru "master control 1000 hours of testing", yet there are lots of complaints online about how their watches don't wind properly, lose time by >15 sec each day, or other misc problems that their "1000 hours of testing" definitely should've caught. Sorry about the rant here lol - their "oh we're the watchmakers' watchmaker" marketing line just doesn't sit right with me.
That's insightful. Thanks! Probably answers my question about why other people aren't as excited about them as me!
Well to be fair, basically no brands have true hand finishing at <$50k (at least the “quality” brands). I would consider JLC good value, although I personally prefer glashutte original.
I think the part of the confusion is that, when comparing watches of the same price range, JLC is generally on par with most other brands you could compare to. However, they have watches at so many price points that it's difficult to characterize what a "JLC-level finish" really is
One of their most popular (and cheapest) watches is the Reverso, which has a mechanically finished movement that is pretty unimpressive from an aesthetics point of view (aside from it being a weird shape) and definitely not comparable to a Duometre.
Because of that, you get some people thinking that you get Patek-level finishing in a $5-8k watch, which isn't true. Contrast this with brands like the PP, AP, VC, AL&S, etc. who generally only participate in upper price tiers, and thus have a more consistent "signature" finishing standard
This is helpful. I liked the reverso because I liked the history around polo. You have taken some of the shine off the watch for me, but you probably directed my 7-8k to a better watch!
Apple Watch is the right answer.
guys who wear expensive watches, like Rolex, are you not worried about getting mugged? I read on this forum frequently people telling that Rolex is an investment and it retains value or even grows in value... but it only retains value until somebody corners you and takes it. you're literally flaunting your wealth, wearing $20k+ on your hand. it's like dangling a worm to attract fish. how do you feel comfortable doing that?
Depends on where you live. I live in HK and it's pretty normal to see extremely expensive watches on random passerby's wrists (including unobtanium like PP 5711s and most FP Journe). Same with Singapore.
Even in cities like NYC and London (which, in my opinion, sometimes get an undeserved reputation for being crime-ridden) can be relatively worry-free if you're aware of your surroundings and where you are.
can you actually identify what a passing stranger wears? I'm not a watches guy and just looked up PP 5711 and FP Journe and they look like normal watches (I'd even say PP 5711 looks ugly) that you can buy for $100. I would never assume that they are worth more than $1000 if I saw them on a stranger.
