Hghest Paid Field for (Independent) Consultants?
Hello all,
I'm going to get straight to the point here - My goal is to make as much as possible (at least 100k+ a year) while working 6-9 months a year, and I'd like to reach this goal by the time I'm about 30. I basically want to bust my ass over the next ten or so years, become a highly specialized expert in a lucrative field, make a lot of money per hour, become my own boss (go independent), and then...not work a lot of hours. It seems like consulting is the best way to go to reach this goal...but in which field? I'm looking for a nice little niche where this kind of career might be possible.
any good ideas?
100K a year working 6-9 months a year.....join the Teacher's Union and then become a Superintendent.
zing +1
or you could become a gigolo, I hear women are willing to pay top $$$ and you'd only have to work maybe 4-6 months a year
just marry some cougar heiress and make sure in the prenup you get min. 100k of her future earnings, then promptly divorce by summer. incluidng divorce procedures, all in all should take no more than 9 months or so. hey, beats having to join some commy teachers union as per the superintendent option

educational administration actually is a field i've considered. i was hoping i'd get some actual responses here...
get your masters, and become a public high school teacher in a rich area (ct, northern jersey)
my best guess is to own your own business or work for a seasonal industry. certain businesses (web-based businesses mostly) take a good bit of effort to get rolling, but once they're up they require relatively little maintenance. for instance, the founder of wallstreetoasis is currently traveling in south america long-term.
also, if there's anything i've learned, it's that freedom like you're talking about mainly comes through outsourcing your work to employees and managers, not focusing on making a lot per hour to compensate. try reading the 4 hour workweek-- i think it's along the lines of what you're looking for.
also, i would consider becoming a salesman in the it, pharmaceutical, or medical supplies fields. if you exceed your yearly targets in six months, i doubt your boss will care if you dick around the rest of the time.
interesting. it doesn't sound like this book offers much in the way of actual jobs...but the outsourcing strategies sound interesting...im going to order it and give it a read - thank you!
I know an independent consultant who charges $200/hr for his expertise on, believe it or not, sewage treatment. It is a one-man operation, so a substantial portion of that goes straight in to his pocket. He travels around the country to various sewage treatment or meat packing plants and helps them meet their effluent goals. He can basically charge whatever he wants because the plants are desperate to get back into compliance and stop the government fines.
PhD in environmental engineering and 10 yr experience in industry. Think outside the box, ladies and gentlemen.
alternatively, you can be a professor in a field that actually pays pretty well. my dad used to be a professor at LSU med school before he moved into hospital management and he made good money/worked easy hours/had lots of time off.
