How does background check work?

I recently signed a SA 2021 offer. As is expected, my contract talked about a background check but I was wondering about how that works.

Will the company reach out about 3-4 months before the internship to ask for details? Will it pick the resume from the application submitted? How will it ask for contacts?

Company will ask you to sign a document where you confirm the process, and whether you want to disclose anything beforehand (credit, criminal, education, ...). Then they'll hand this data to an external supplier, typically, that will do all the checks. the applicant is responsible to provide the personal data they are legally required to ask (no legal requirement to disclose medical data or genetic data). Medical data for the purposes of ADA will be requested AFTER making an offer and BEFORE you start.

If any of the checks do come back as negative, they are required to disclose the type of feedback and the company they used to you directly. Be prepared to explain why this feedback is not a problem for this particular job.

If canceled means you will never work for them a single day - then no, why would they bother paying a supplier? these checks cost money.

If you mean you will be WFH, then yes, all checks are typically required (we hired new folks and checked everything even though nobody ever set foot in our offices yet).

the disclosure form has all questions where you type in dates and stuff. reference checks are normally given out as a form where you put in all the dates, employers and contacts.
