How far do you guys live from work?
I will be moving to NYC to start my job in IB and was wondering how far people live from your job? Is 40min commute by train each way too far?

No, Ive done that commute for a year. It sucks sometimes but doable. Also depends on your bank’s culture. Right now, I’m living 1.5hrs away from NYC but havent had to go into the office.
10 minute walk home to desk.
I’m planning to live in Jersey and commute through path/subway to work in midtown which is 36min door to door. Does most banks pay for late night uber back to Jersey?
May differ by bank, my recollection is that they would if that is where the person lived. Obv within limits and/or willingness to bill back to the client who may be cool with paying for that expense item.
Yes they pay for late night Ubers. I've done Jersey City to Midtown 50-minute each way commute.
Don't recommend that. It takes a toll on your happiness once you hit late nights for 2-months straight. And I wasn't even in banking at that time.
When I was in NYC back in my heyday Tribeca was my home. Very close to the office and that was the best/shortest commute I had in my career.
Bumppppp
I’ve seen a variety and plenty of people at different distances. When I started like an intern/personally I was effectively walking distance but able to use subway to make it a short commute (maybe 20 mins from my apt to my desk in office), eventually I moved to more of a 30-45 commute I guess. Definitely easier especially in IB to live close and effectively have your home near office because of hours, unpredictability, etc. but now with more WFH flexibility that might not be as top of a priority. 40 mins sounds reasonable to me in my limited knowledge and the most important is to have a place to live if possible where you feel like you can be your best self hopefully
good luck with your move and best wishes :).
Giving you an early welcome to nyc….
It takes me about 3 seconds to get under my desk and sleep AND it's rent free. Not sure you can beat that
20 mins by subway and 5 min by car
Live 15-20m walk from the office. Love it.
It’s so tough to live close to work without breaking the bank, unfortunately I don’t have the luxury of paying that type of rent. And, I felt like living in Jersey city (hobroken/ newport area) will probably be fine given that I’m not big on socializing. Main concern is to be reimbursed for Uber or rides late night.
Why? IB should give you the money
10-15 min walk. I would 100% recommend this, worth the extra cost for the quality of life improvement. Starting day off with a nice short walk while jamming to some music vs cramming into a subway/tube.
Bump
I live, eat, and sleep at my desk - gotta maintain that top bucket mentality.
Pay the premium and be walking distance or close enough with a 10min subway ride
15-20 min walk or 10-15 min on subway. I’d say try to be within 25 min your first year given unpredictability of the job.
