This fall I'm going to be interviewing for my last internship before I graduate (shooting for MM IB/FLDP/Big4 from a non-target for IB). My sophomore year I was the treasurer and scholarship chair for my fraternity. Early in the year we went under investigation and were forced to move out midway through the school year because of hazing/drinking. In past interviews and mock interviews i've been asked why I only held these positions for a year and no positions since. Sometimes i'm truthful and sometimes I say that's just when my term ended but I never really know how to answer that. The investigation from the school went on nearly all year so could I even refer to the investigation as a reason my grades suffered sophomore year (distraction in addition to school/work etc) because I will likely be asked why I have a very average gpa. My school told me to take the fraternity off my resume altogether but I think in the very least it shows I'm a leader amongst my peers. wanted to see how finance folks would take this answer... should I just give a bullshit answer and not get into the matter or should I be forthcoming about why I am no longer involved in my fraternity?

I strongly recommend against referring to the investigation as a reason why your GPA suffered sophomore year. In fact, I might agree with your school, it might be better to just leave out the fraternity altogether from your resume, unless of course you are networking with someone or come across someone from the same fraternity who is in a position to help you get your resume through to first round interviews, etc.
I feel ya.. what about more along the lines of holding multiple exec positions within my fraternity in addition to working as a reason I my grades suffered. then if asked I say that I no longer hold positions because I wanted to focus more on grades and expanding opportunities professionally.. hence getting involved in professional clubs/ improving gpa since?
