How important are skills such as financial modelling and valuation for hedge funds?

I am a sophomore with no finance work experience whatsoever and looking to land my first trading internship at a bank/hedge fund but my resume seems far too mediocre. I do have some work experience but for non-finance related fields that don't seem to be useful on my resume, as well as a okay gpa (second upper honours).

Hence, I was thinking of investing some money into attending a financial modelling and valuations course to boost my resume and skillset. Would this be a good decision?

Helps. But don't be surprised to find fundamental shops that aren't heavy on modelling.

if not financial modelling then what can I do to boost my skill set? What skills are important to a hedge fund and how can I acquire them?

You're only a sophomore. Focus on getting good grades (and sure, take the modeling classes if you have time, but don't sacrifice your grades) so you are in good position to recruit for IBD summer jobs next year, do well as a summer analyst so you get a return offer and then work/prep hard to get a HF offer. Really, it's the tried and true way. Most non-quant HFs don't recruit out of undergrad anyways as undergrads don't have the skillset or experience to be useful to them.

That info is all over this site. I must have woken up on the right side of the bed to rehash it rather than harangue you.

hi mrb87, thanks for rehashing it (and teaching me a new word haha)

I'm a sophomore but my course is only 3 years and I'm currently in the 2nd semester already, which means next will be my final year. My grades for final examinations were not stellar (due to several health issues and unfortunate accidents in the first 2 semesters sadly and I can't retake my modules either) and because of a cumulative GPA system, so I'm pretty much expected to graduate with 2.1 honours already (even though my usual performance during the terms were straight As, top of the class). Now I know that Banks have killer requirements and sadly I'll might not be able to meet the mark and that is why I feel like learning extra essential skills may boost my employability.

I do not have the lofty desire to start out in a hedge fund , but as that is my end goal , I feel that interning at one will allow me to acquire alot of necessary knowledge.
