How's life as a college freshman?

Was a college freshman almost 10 years ago.....

Curious to know, how is life as a college freshmen now?

Hear there's more girls than guys in college? Is it easier to pick up chicks/have sex?

Greek life is losing prominence? Not socially acceptable to be part of one given SJW trends?

What careers do freshmen aspire to go into? Finance med and law were very popular when I started school. Medicine was especially popular given we were in a recession (people were risk averse). Guessing the best and the brightest  go into comp sci/FAANG?

Is it easier to get a higher GPA given online learning, etc.?

Are friend groups still segregated among social classes/ethnicities/etc.? What about dating?

What percentage of your class is LGBTQ? Heard Yale is close to 30%?

I remember college being incredibly stressful given we were coming out the great recession. We had quite a few suicides in my class. What are stress levels like now?

Anything else I'm missing? Curious to know about other trends.

That's so cringe. Glad I went to a school with little to no fraternity presence. Getting laid here is a complete meritocracy. If you're not retarded, somewhat funny, and hit the gym you'll get laid. No need to audition for these gay clubs (and then pay to join lmao), get pressured to do drugs and get alcohol poisoning, and talk to shallow girls that offer nothing beyond surface level. Not to mention your chances of getting accused for sexual assault increase exponentially once you join. Cheers mate.

As someone who was big into greek life I hear what you're saying but that's super Animal House kind of vibes. Most good fraternities will yes have tons of partying with drinking and extracurrics as you mentioned but beyond that, it's what you make of it. You can make some of the closest friendships in your life with both your brothers and sorority girls you're close to as well as get exposed to a wide variety of people you otherwise wouldn't have ever talked to if you hadn't joined.

And to your point on being accused of sexual assault, yes certain orgs are prone to that but you can definitely 1) steer clear of the guys who do that kind of thing and 2) not be a creep who is an "at risk" guy of assaulting or violating women and it likely won't happen to you.

All I'm trying to say is that yes greek life can get a bad rep but it doesn't need to be that way. Make your own decisions at the end of the day and they will dictate what actually happens to you.

Lol Bama. Alabama greek life is absurd. Like u said that's not the norm at all, it's literally the only school with something as powerful as "The Machine"

Much harder to get girls/pussy these days because guys have to be careful of not getting #MeToo (one accusation, you may get kicked out, and your life is ruined), and now 2) COVID makes going to parties harder and hooking up with some random chick (fewer parties going on, so opportunity set is lower)

So glad I didn't have to go through this when I was in college

Greek life is losing prominence? Not socially acceptable to be part of one given SJW trends?

Yes and no. If you go to a school that had prominent greek life historically, then it's still fairly prominent, well at least it was precovid. It's just constantly under attack- at least fraternities are. Everyone has to walk on eggshells with party themes and hazing otherwise you get kicked off pretty quickly. I just graduated, but pre-covid fraternities were constantly getting suspended/at high risk of getting booted. It doesn't help that everyone wants to record everything they do nowadays too. So easy for something that no one would've given a second thought to or even remembered happening ten years ago to now get recorded and blow up the next day. It's honestly pretty ridiculous.

I still don't understand why some colleges appear so eager to kick off chapters. It's the main source of donating money and for schools that have a pretty active greek scene, it can definitely be a deciding factor for applicants as greek life, and the respective greek scene, could heavily influence their college social life. Besides a school like UChicago, a school with a nonexistent normal college social life, but a school where basically everyone would attend if they were admitted, the respective college's social scene is a pretty important factor. Obv there's some hardos that just wanna grind school and networking starting day1 but that's not the majority of college students. Inversely, how many incel nerds would refuse to attend a school solely because it has a semi prominent greek scene? 1) Ur not forced to be apart of it, it's simply there if you want it and 2) say a school has no greek life. The students that come in that already abhor greek life aren't going to be friends with the type of kids that would have joined greek life had it been offered.

So I've always been at a loss because by eradicating greek life, the university risks losing a ton of donation funds and the number of applicants most likely decreases for the reasons I stated above. Every college wants to pump up application numbers because it'll decrease the admit rate. Basically is the "good" PR worth potentially losing millions of dollars and thousands of applicants? It doesn't add up to me. Maybe I'm just stupid and looking at it the wrong way but idk

As context, I go to a large state school.

Greek life is as prominent as ever; if you are a guy and want to have a good time you have to rush. Hazing is still extremely heinous.

Not hard to have sex.

People do a shit ton of drugs: coke, molly, ketamine, xans etc.

Everyone is going to have a different experience with fraternity life.  Some are great and some are shit.  I did not have a good experience with it but many of my friends at other schools had a very good experience with it and stayed friends well after college.  The hazing at my fraternity was weird, at least for me.  A good part of the hazing was treating pledges poorly, which just did not feel right to me, so I dropped out.  I stayed friends with the guys in the fraternity, though.   I liked the going out to bars part of it, but that was about it.  And I still went out to bars with the guys even after I dropped.

Way too many guys on this site are afraid of women.  They feel like are going to get me tood by some female who is trying to take down men.  If you do not act like a total a******, you are probably not not going to get me tood.  Some guys have always acted like ********. The only difference now is that some females are calling them out on it.

Yea totally agree with that last paragraph. The only difference now is that the idiots r rightfully getting called out. And it's extremely rare for some chick to intentionally accuse someone of something heinous that they didn't do just to spite them. If dudes on here wanna act like that's a common occurrence then that says a lot and they need to get out more. And sorry bout ur pledging experience, that sucks ass. I get the intent of shitting on pledges but to an extent. Like the collective suffering obv brings the PC together but there's definitely a line and as these r ur future brothers it's not a great idea to have an entire PC absolutely hating some upperclassmen. Doesn't rlly foster a great brotherhood post initiation

Not a freshman (a few years in) in college but can give insights into freshman college.

Girls more than guys: yes but AMERICAN MOVIES LIED IT IS NOTHING LIKE IN THE MOVIES

Drugs: lots of kids in business/finance school thinks it’s cool with coke. STEM takes cannabis, etc. Everyone vapes.

LGBTQ: yeah everyone is more open to it

Competitiveness and grades during online study?: Some suffer due to missing out on the college experience (lack of dopamine activities) and plus the pressure of some students that cheats that makes the kids who genuinely want to try feel bad

SAT: was a fucking waste to those who graduated in 2020+

From what I can tell as someone that graduated a year ago but hang out or go on dates with a lot of girls who are still in college, everyone is a lot more liberal now. There is a lot of segregation between social classes. It seems like there are a lot more edgy, alternative rich kids these days, but maybe that's just based on my sample size of schools in the city.

I actually get drinks pretty often with a guy at work who's in his late 20s, and I can see the generational differences. I feel like he came from a simpler time, when dudes could just be dudes.

Agreed... been getting a lot of interest from younger women (surprisingly?) in their late teens/early twenties. I'm in my late twenties also right now.

Heard alot of guys in their early twenties/late teens these days are incredibly insecure, can't talk to girls, have weak erections, are secretly gay, etc. I can't imagine growing up with some of the porn on the internet today, must have really fucked up the minds of the younger men. Something considered hardcore when I was growing up would be "lightspeed girls," and even those videos were pretty edgy at the time.

We didn't even have tinder or uber until my junior/senior year in college. I guess with all the online dating and communication, men have become weirder in person too.

This is the result of tinder.  Women inherently know their highest value is 18 - 25 so they target more affluent men, read older, because they now have easy access to them.  Dating apps like Tinder I think is one of the main driving factors around why there are less men in college than there was even 10 years ago.  The college experience has been radically changed for men.  From the changes to title 9 under Obama, to the rampant hyper misandrist version of feminism that is common on elite universities these days, to the general decline in the acceptance of mens spaces, and the general violent transition to empowering pussy men on campuses.  It isn't a shock that men are just leaving the university track.  It is a really dangerous thing for societal stability.  This is making men as a whole more depressed, but even more than that it is completely destroying women.

Honestly, young adults as a population feel more.... extreme? nowadays. Either you're a raging liberal or a raging conservative. Someone is always offended at something. I hate to be so "back in my day", but that's kind of the vibe. 10 years ago it wasn't "down with cisgender white men!" as strongly as it is now, and not everyone needed to be a color of the rainbow pride flag to fit in.

Currently: future neurologist, current psychotherapist Previously: investor relations (top consulting firm), M&A consulting (Big 4), M&A banking (MM)

I'm a freshman at Emory. There is a decent amount of mixing of people of different ethnicities especially among Asian-white-Indian kids. I think Emory is plurality Asian now. There are a higher number of virgins than there used to be. People also seem fairly averse to dating and a lot of people are more socially awkward. Politics are definitely more polarized and SJWs are fairly strong. However its easy to avoid them. Med, finance, and law are very popular with CS rising. Finance has risen a lot at Emory. Grades were very inflated during online school. Generally to make deans list one needed to get a 3.8 but during online school it was 3.95. A lot of freshman are very awkward due to the end of high school being online. Ecigs and Juul is very popular. Drug usage has gone down somewhat but weed is fairly popular. Frats were never huge at Emory so its about the same. However they've had to deal with their "problematic" histories. According to the professors the students have gotten smarter over the years but that could just be due to Emory becoming more selective(average SAT this year was 1510-1520 and ACT was 34). LGBT is around 15-20%. Stress is not too bad among freshman but fairly high among upperclassmen. There are a lot of people into the alt fad.
