Huron Consulting Group - Obviously not 1st tier, but is it 2nd tier?
25 on the Vault consulting prestige rankings last year.
Good company. They do a lot of hospital turnarounds. My close friend's father was an consultant at Huron after 25 years of private practice as a doctor and he was always involved in very interesting projects. Seem like a solid company.

Yes there was the accounting scandal but it seems they are doing better than ever now. To me #25 on the Vault prestige list doesn't seem like "Tier 6."
A good signal of quality is starting salary. First year Huron analyst = first year audit associate at Big 4. Shut it down.
their life sciences practice is peanuts, and i have yet to run into someone working at huron that doesnt do healthcare. i would presume that the exit ops are nothing to brag about either, although i have seen a couple at some top b schools.
So essentially get out and go somewhere else ASAP?
no not necessarily
They have plucked a few Big Four all-stars at the manager level. I'm talking guys who would be promoted to director this year and up for the partnership in two. I think they aren't doing it on a one-off basis either. They may be on the up-and-up.

I know there have been discussions on Huron in the past, but I was curious if anyone with more recent perspective could provide input. They recruit at my school for both SA and FT positions. I'm aware they've been growing a lot recently, and I hear they offer a strong analyst experience.
What are the exit opportunities? Do analysts/associates commonly leave for other consulting firms or top business schools?
How do the different practice areas (Education & Life Sciences, Healthcare, Legal) compare in terms of experience and clients? Personally, I would be especially interested in the Education practice.
Overall, where does the firm rank? What are the other comparable firms in its tier?

id avoid huron unless you want to do provider care consulting for the rest of your career. overall, its a niche shop. i have seen some past consultants place into top mba programs, but that can be said about any firm. not sure where one would rank it because its so industry/service specific. its not a strategy house by any means. other comparable firms imo would be like advisory board, navigant, ims, or like ecg. if its your only offer, id take it. youll travel a lot...if thats what you like...

If not b-school, what would I do after 2 years? I think this is my biggest point of confusion.
What would you say if I told you I'm genuinely interested in the practice area (i.e. Education)? How much of a role should this play in making a decision if I'm unsure of what I want to do long-term?
you should only go to business school if its necessary for you to be at a certain place within your career...otherwise its a huge waste of money. in the long run, i think getting a position at a big4 would "look" better to those outside of the consulting industry, but that shouldnt make you sway toward the big4. find out what kind of projects huron does, whats their pipeline look like, etc. feel them out and see whats going on there, what kind of people work there, etc. if your interested in education, go ahead and do it...just dont expect to have an opportunity to work in finance, energy, utilities, healthcare, etc. later down the road with such a specific skill set (granted i mean once you hit manager, etc.)
if you do however have offers from PwC or ey, id take those in a heart beat over huron. also huron is a publicly traded company, be mindful of that...

My roommate interned at Huron in Chicago last summer. He is absolutely in love with that company. He had nothing but amazing things to say.
I know two people who work there and they both love it too. Was named Entrepreneur Magazine's Top small Business in America I think.
Its a good shop, basically all the profitable portions of Arthur Andersen's consulting practice before AA imploded...lots of financial restructuring work, heavy on accounting and finance.
Its publically traded and was originally financed by Lake Capital out of Chi-town

Huron consists of quite a few divisions acquired over the past few years, so depending on which division you are applying to the salary can be a bit different.
I know the strategy division (mainly Galt consulting) is definitely competitive in terms of remuneration compared to top tier firms.
The model is quite clever, growth through acquisitions, and looking at their headcount of 1500+, up from dozens when they first started, says a lot about their ambition and growth.
Growth is exploding. A top student I know turned down an offer from a reputable MM bank to go to work with Huron b/c he is so excited about the opportunities there.
just interviewed with them also, i got a second round, and was surprised to see that the cfo was actually was my greeter.
friend got 55k +10k sign on. some minimal year bonus i think. and some compensation programs for traveling alot. which i think would add up to make a substantial difference in pay.
i heard that it is very possible to progress through the firm quickly since it is growing so quickly (granted you deserve it).
60k plus 6 signing bonus in NY....they adjust your salary based on your location. I know that NY gets highest initial base
The important thing is, though, do they get COLA?

huron recruits pretty heavily at my school, i have quite a few friends that have interned with them and i actually got to talk with the cfo for a while. seems like the average age is on the younger side and i've heard it was a really fun place to work. i've heard stories of: scoping out hotties during work, drinking during lunch, spending fridays doing community service and getting paid, and the interns got to visit gary holdren's (ceo) chicago condo, drink & watch fireworks.
It sounds like a nice play to work. If anyone else can provide an input of their own, that would be great. Thanks.

I do not know, but recruiting for summer is over
not sure about interns, but if you want to go there full time, transfer to Miami (Ohio). They took something like 23 kids from there this year.
They definitely take interns for the summer, though recruiting is probably over. The CEO went to Miami Ohio. They also took about 20 kids from Michigan and Notre Dame, but they are growing like crazy.
