I need some advice coming from a non target. This is getting ridiculous
I've posted a thread here on the same topic about 2 months ago and one probably 2 months before that, to summarize, I am a Junior at a non-target (think big International Business) with a 3.93 GPA and a double major in Finance and Economics. Decent extracurriculars including executive board for my fraternity. I do not have relevant work experience in finance. I've done some economic research work for my university and have been a manager at a fast food chain for 4 years now.
Regardless, I've cold called every firm in my city and some in Charlotte, I've used job sites to submit my resume. I have offered to work for free. I've exhausted my fraternity's local chapter resources. My school does not have a public alumni database (how retarded). I've had a couple informational interviews with local branches of ML and MS.
I have no idea what I am doing wrong. I have no idea what my next step should be. I've been at this since September I think. This is driving me insane. Is it really this hard to get an internship going to a non target? That said I have an internship (unpaid) at a local boutique for the Fall Semester but I would like something for the summer at a little bigger place.
Help? Tips? Advice?
....
Are you getting any interviews? Have you only applied to FO positions, say IBD or S&T while neglecting corp infrastructure positions (finance/risk/ops etc)? Did you submit your applications during the right time frame? I’m a semi-non-target and still have had BB interviews (non IBD S&T), even though I have not reached out to any alumni.
Not getting interviews period. I'm applying to Corp finance as well. And I applied fairly early in the recruiting cycle.
Maybe you should post your resume...
I'm from a non-target with a GPA much lower than yours and still managed 7 interviews.
How have you been networking?? Often times, even having an analyst recommend you can get you an interview at a BB.
Wow, 7 interviews coming from a non-target is impressive. What was your strategy?
I'm from a non-target as well and have exhausted every method out there, but have had zero interviews.
Majority were through on-campus recruiting, non IBD of course as it is a non-target. Other 2 interviews were BB IBD interviews landed through networking - school alumni forwarded my resume to HR, made strong recommendation, etc...
I think you are on the right track by offering to work for free. The experience is really what you need now - the pennies mean nothing.
That said, larger places will be more difficult because there is a lot of red tape with HR. I would recommend reaching out to hedge funds and mm pe firms. I would think some of these would be willing to have someone with a 3.9 gpa that is eager to work for free.
Where can I upload my resume so that its viewable to the public?
And how did you land 7 interviews? Do you have work experience?
Cashcow - I've always thought that with my GPA and double major it shouldnt be hard finding a start somewhere, honestly I'm amazed. I think my biggest problem is networking because we do not have a public alumni database (available to students) at my school. Its ridiculous. Where could I find a list of Hedge Funds / MM PE firms that I should try?
Top target, GPA north of 3.5, more than 10 interviews including 3 final rounds and no offer. I don't really have advice for you, but just replying since misery loves company.
Definitely better than all those posts "OMG I DONT KNOW WHICH 3 OF MY DREAM OFFERS TO ACCEPT!?!"
Wow 10 interviews, 3 finals and no offers. That hurts man.
post your resume asap. I go to semi target and had plenty of interviews.
you can upload your resume at razume.com
Chris_Marlin, Did you ultimately get an offer?
Yes I received 3 offers - all through OCR, wasn't able to land any of the BB IBD positions. I've asked about the positions before on the board so it's not a big secret. I will be at BlackRock this summer.
Congrats!
Thanks bankingrox, by the tone of your post I'm assuming you're recruitment season went well too.
To the OP, there's definitely a possibility you might have some big flaws on your resume, once posted I'm sure we'll be able to improve it if changes are necessary.
Yes, it did but it was very very rough journey. I had tons of rejections before my offer came, so hang in there.
are you guys all current juniors or sophomores? Also, Chris Marlin if you guys are getting OCR but with no IBD I find that a little hard to believe, can you clarify? do they just send their asset managers?
At my school we get operations, finance division, technology, some wealth/investment/asset management. In the 3 years I've been using our OCR system, I have not seen an IBD interview once...
out of curiosity what school are you from
I will PM you.
To the OP, have you tried requesting alumni contact information from your career center? Do you know anyone who graduated from your school in the recent past who have gone into banking or whatever it is that you're looking for? What about recent alums in your fraternity or any sports you play? I found that a lot of the alums I've spoken to and have helped me get interviews have been those who were involved in the same groups as I am. That said, I imagine if you get in touch with people from Univ. of South Carolina at any of these big places, they would be thrilled to help you out since they probably went through the same issues as you.
Realistically, not being able to reach out to alums is probably the biggest problem you have and will keep you from getting an internship that you want. See what your career center can do for you about the whole alumni thing.
Yes I have tried requesting and the method is this: I have to find the name of the person and figure out somehow that they went to my school. Request their info. The school will contact them and ask if they want to me contacted and once they reply then I'll get the person's information. How inefficient is that haha
No I don't know any recent grads that went into banking. Recent alums in my fraternity are all mgmt and marketing majors (thats what my school is good at).
The person I spoke with in the CC today said she would find out if she had access to it and kinda slip me her information since I've done everything in my power and have exhausted the list they generally give to stupids to do in their search. So I'll probably hear back from them next week.
Also here is my resume, its been approved by my career center and what not (we have to have approved resumes to have access to recruiters etc)

Are you joking? put it on one page, and make it reverse chronological. the first thing we see is dairy queen which doesn't reflect well upon you at all.
you have basically very little explanation of leadership experience (the small section on the 2nd page) and work experience can be condensed, i have no clue as to why everything is so spaced out on your resume. Don't trust your career center at all.
Ideally follow one of these wharton resumes because that is what they are used to seeing http://www.vpul.upenn.edu/careerservices/wharton/resguide.html#samples
Wow, there is a HUGE amount of white space on your resume.. no other activities or ECs you can throw on there??
Oh wow, I didn't even see the second page... yeah.. your resume needs a lot of work..
Your career center approved that? They should be ashamed of themselves. PM me and I will send you the IB template.
Its not actually two pages the site changed the formatting to that. Its a snug one page. But ok I see it needs some work. But yeah they approved that.
Also do a better job of staying anonymous. Your resume has enough information that I was able to figure out who you are (your full name) and where you go to school in a one minute internet search. There are some clowns here who can post your linkedin profile (which you have) on here, and this would be the first thing that would show up when someone googles you.
Your resume sucks. Never trust your career center.
You def. need to edit your resume better. also, just bc you dont have alumni database doesnt mean you cant use google for 2 min search:

Make sure to elaborate about your activities and try to write outcomes too. ex: improvement of persuasion skills.. -> could be like: Presented persuasively to 35 companies and effectively encouraged 14 to participate in assisting research.
You want to demonstrate competencies and abilties while also telling a story! Also reverse the work experience order.
you should feel relieved that your problem is quite simple. Stop making contact attempts till you PERFECT your resume. Your most relevant/recent experience is Orange Julius...that's a negative eye catcher plus just about everything else on your resume. I think at this point, give yourself literally 5 hours to scrap your current resume and redo according to the formats that people posted above. Then post it again and we can help you catch minor mistakes/improvements. For non targets/semi targets, your resume will often be your only representation to a firm, it has to be really impressive.
Yeah your resume needs to be completely overhauled. You'll get autodinged wherever you apply with that, and alumni are going to hate you for wasting their time.
Agreed. Your resume is shit. You should know better, good luck.
Need help with my resume also. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
