Would hold off - doing offcycle internship and they paid for monitors.

No it wouldn't be overkill. I'd highly recommend it. Most will be alright with just 1 large monitor, but I personally prefer having my workspace stretch across 2 and then my laptop constantly have various news websites running.

Would agree with other poster in that some banks may cover the cost in which case you might want to wait. Though I can't imagine they would have an issue reimbursing if you kept your receipt and kept total costs

Yes. It would be. Hands down. First, I doubt you'll be reimbursed for it. Second, spending a few hundred bucks for a WFH setup is not worth it for a summer internship. Unless you happen to have a second monitor lying around and want to invest in cables or have use for a second monitor once this internship is over, I'd call it a waste of money. Don't get me wrong, I have 2 Monitors and a KVM switch at home so I can do WFH and switch over to my own PC once I'm done for the day,, but at this stage in your career, I wouldn't necessarily waste the money.

I believe CITI has given all of their FT IBD employees a stipend to buy WFH setups. I just think in terms of productivity that a laptop screen is just insane to work off of... even for an internship.

If I had to re-assess the value add tech you could but I guess it would be: 1. Mouse 2. Keyboard 3. Monitor

It might become a waste of money but you can find a shit ton of monitors for $100-150 which on an IBD intern pay scale while WFH really isn't a dent. I've had mine since college and found working from my dorm / apartment was more productive too with a monitor. But base it off your own appetite for spending I suppose.

Getting a stipend is a little different than paying out of pocket. And, I don't disagree - that's why I was upfront when I said unless you had a second monitor already or plan to continue using it, I woudln't. If the OP plans on continuing to se the second monitor, by all means - that's a smart investment. I have a two monitor setup for a long time and love it. When I have my worktop plugged in, it's 3 minotors. Then again, I have a worktop with a 12" screen - so I use the other two monitors for the majority of my work anyway. We also don't know how big of a laptop the OP is getting. That does need to factor into the equation as well (as well as the types of cables he'd need).

I definitely agree that a good keyboard and mouse add more value than a minotor though.

To your point on cost, I just found a 21.5" monitor from Staples for 80 bucks. Add in the cost of an adapter (and cables depending on the inputs) and you're looking at about $120 for that. Add in a decent Keyboard/Mouse combo and you're looking at $175 all in.

It seems to me that this is precisely the moment in their career where it would be worth it to shell out a couple hundred for a nice work setup. Get an ergonomic chair, larger monitor to reduce eyestrain, etc. Since they'd presumably be working at home and not shelling out NYC rates for rent, they can allocate part of that saved money to the setup. It's a small cost to pay to optimize an already suboptimal internship experience.

Thanks for the input everyone. I will wait for further details about my internship before making a move.

@Frieds to answer your question: I am using a 13" laptop. I have a keyboard and mouse that I am using, and a good chair too, so I am doing okay. I've also got two HDMI ports and two HDMI cables, so I don't think (?) the cost of cables etc. should be a big problem if I get a monitor or two. If I do end up getting the monitors, I would continue to use it through my final year uni, for my academic work and part-time work (which is all basically through Citrix), and hopefully after that too.

Basically, I'd like to think it wouldn't be a few hundred wasted on just a summer's worth of use...

I'm waiting just in case they give a stipend or something (it's still really early I would think), and I don't want to go through the hassle of sending back receipts. Also, some banks still seem to pushing for some sort of in-person component toward the end which could be a pretty huge cost because you pretty much have to grab something last minute so I'm definitely waiting. I currently also have a 13inch laptop and planning to just have one other monitor. It seems two monitors (so three screens in total) would be a bit overkill?

Honestly, it's a bit overkill if you don't have the setup already (I already had 2 Monitors for my home PC setup, so it wasn't as if I'm spending the extra money). If I were you, I'd invest in a larger monitor (a 27" + that you can do more with on one monitor and keep email/web browsing/etc. in the other.

also do people recommend buying a printer? just to print things out to check before submission of deliverables (excel/ppt)? do u guys recommend a color printer or a monochrome one will do? thanks so much!!
