Incoming [Title] at [Bank]

To preface: I know there was a thread about his earlier but I felt some clarification could be of use.

I'm in a bit of a bind as to if its O.K. to put the Incoming SA title on linkedin. On one hand I know it can come off as pretentious or a bit snobby and could possibly label myself as the hyperactive overly intense kid at the office.

On the other hand, it could help with networking/group selection, so when I send linkedin request to a group member they don't write me off as a fiend willing to get elbow dropped for an interview.

If someone can give a definitive answer on this, that would be stellar.

Honestly, in this day and age it is encouraged by bank HR and is so ubiquitous that I'm pretty sure I see a larger % of kids who have it vs. those who dont. To the older thread's point about it being douchey and pretentious, yes it is - but to my earlier statement it is now a poor proxy for determining who is a dick and who isn't. Plenty of summers at my bank who had it and are great people. So here goes, and I'm positive i'll collect some monkey shit from some of the older guys, but I think it is fine.

My point is that yes I agree it's tacky but I see it so much now that I don't think anything of it. At this point, for me, it won't make or break your impression on me. All I - and hopefully everyone else - really focus on is work quality and do I get along with the kid

Sometimes I put "Incoming indigestion" note on my bathroom door, just to let my toilet know that today is going to be a sh**ty day.

You killed the Greece spread goes up, spread goes down, from Wall Street they all play like a freak, Goldman Sachs 'o beat.

So what is idea here ? You "made it" to awesomeness, so you don't want to be mistakenly confused with the low-life fiends struggling for interviews ?

lol

Can't you just say in your Linkedin message to the people you are networking with that you are an incoming SA? That seems to accomplish the same thing...

Maybe the world has changed, but when i was at a BB I wouldn't have wanted a bunch of incoming SAs trying to network with me for group selection.

I’m just an intern but I’m curious: at this point can there really be that much downside to putting it in your profile? Probably 35+ out of 40 people in my intern class put “incoming investment banking summmer analyst” and almost all the full time analysts who start next week have “incoming investment banking analyst” on their profile. People at my school put “incoming x” for whatever job they’re doing. It seems like you’d have a hard time giving one person shit when you’d have to give every person shit for it

Edit: I personally didn’t put it as my headline, but it seemed like I was just about the only one

If you get a FT after summer I can see why you'd put it out their. Just so that recruiters don't write to you with random job offers during the next year.

That said if the first thing you'd do is update your status to 'Incoming' the only reason is to brag, but LinkedIn is 50% for bragging so... It is comparable to instagram girls posting beach pictures on their profile tagging it #tbt.

to all these people ripping putting it on your profile

is it really the worst thing in the world to WANT to show off that you got a prestigious job/internship after months/years of work?

i won't bs you and tell you i want to put it on there for 'networking' or 'group placement', but i will say that its a nice feeling to let your peers know you accomplished something pretty cool

Exactly..

Beating thousands of people to a rare position is an achievement and one that you should feel free to be proud of.

I bet >50% of the people who get BB SAs don't really have to work that hard at any point in their lives. Rich family->good schools->expensive tutors->Ivy League and other prestigious schools->the world is your oyster Literally just fall ass-backwards and don't do anything dumb in the process.

Anyways, to answer the question, why are you networking with people you'll be working with soon enough anyways, just be normal and build a relationship as you work with them.

That’s exactly why people don’t like it though. It looks insecure and shows you need external validation. All you’re doing is bragging and implicitly saying “I made it in a prestigious industry vs. all you other scrubs”.

Like are you so insecure and in need of validation and need to feel you’re better than others that you can’t wait a couple months and still be able to put it on?

i'd say im a pretty insecure person, so what you're saying isn't wrong, but idk i really don't see the harm

it's a major life change, when you got into college, you posted about it on FB on the day of your acceptance not the day you started at the school

this might be fuel for my future therapist but it's just a good feeling letting the people you know see your accomplishments (this is also fueled by my going to a non target and having an insane chip on my shoulder, but regardless)

You've described 90% of people who get into prestigious careers.. Most people become overachievers because of anxiety and insecurity surrounding wanting to be seen as "the best".

Also depends who your audience is... if you're an incoming SA in a class of 20-100, I wouldn't mind having it on there to find other SAs, as they/FT analysts are mostly the ones looking at your profile. If you're the only analyst at a small boutique, your coworkers are probably a lot older and might not see the whole "Incoming" thing as much.

Just tell your friends you got a job in banking, rather than alerting them through a linkedin notification.
