Inheritance

Okay, so I’m inheriting some land from my grandad, the whole property is worth around 40mm but my piece will be a few hundred acres worth around 1.5mm. The land isn’t in the US, it’s in a country in South Asia. I’m not planning to do much with it expect collect my share of the profits that’ll come from the farm. Still, just for fun, what do you think I should do with the land a few years down the line, should I sell it? Build stuff on it? My uncle is involved in real estate over there and there are quite a few, very profitable deals in the area people are doing. Land values are also sky rocketing. I don’t know, should be fun to see what happens. Kind of excited to get involved in deals in a few years though, super corrupt but also chances for huge profits. Plus not a lot of competition.

I guess so, but I’ll get even more soon, my uncle has no kids and my dad has only me and my sister. I don’t want to sound greedy but I should get 50% over the coming years. Also I’m going to use to further build my own wealth so it’s not like I’m squandering it.

Are you going to be there physically to manage it? That’s a life-changing amount of money, and it’s tied up in a relatively illiquid asset. I don’t know your situation, but I went through something on a lot smaller scale with multiple homes … and it turned into a huge headache to manage. I ended up improving, selling at a premium and moving the money into the market where it’s liquid and I can keep my eye on it any time of the day. The thing that made me nervous about what you said is that the country is ‘corrupt’. Does that mean you’re going to have some guerilla group move onto your land, and you’re going to have to kick them off? What are the biggest risks of holding onto the land? Things happen when vast sums of money are involved and people get really nasty. This includes people in your family. Relatives, etc. will be watching and trying to finagle their way in.
