Intern asks for 2 weeks of vacation time?
Hi all,
This past month a fellow summer analyst asked me if I thought management would mind if he took a 2 week vacation to visit his girl friend in Italy. Let me remind you that this is a 10-12 week internship... This guy has always been sort of an odd ball, but this was plain shocking.
I told him (we'll call him Romeo for the sake of the story) that he should weigh his options. How important is this female friend to you Romeo? Is she more important than your career right now? At this point I'm about as puzzled as a dog with a water hose, but the story must continue.
Then came the most insane part of the story. Romeo met this "girl" on a dating website and they've been chatting for a few months... and he believed she was the "one". I let out a little laugh and Romeo barged out of our office and right before he left, he shouted "I'm just going to go for it". Soon after, I see Romeo knocking on upper management door while the rest of us interns huddled around watching.
Long story short, that was the last time I saw Romeo. Did Romeo ever find his love? Is he still in Italy? I guess we'll never find out.
How did Romeo meet this girl? Does he pay for a tinder account and swipe in different cities in Italy - def sounds like that sort of kid...
Hey - less competition for you when it comes to getting that FT offer am i right? But if this is legitimately true, how did the story end for Romeo?
I wish I knew. I was never very close with Romeo so I was caught off guard with the situation in the first place.
My best explanation is that this is normal in his Italian culture, if this was a US intern that's another issue here
One of you guys should try to make an account so he thinks it is her and ask him to send money.
quick delete this comment lmao genius
No return offer for him.
Reality is many kids don’t understand you can’t just take 2 weeks off.Maybe someone should explain shit to him. Either way, kid sounds like a bad fit.
Who has the money to go to Italy for a girl you haven't met.
Apparently Romeo
Probably someone that doesn't meet many girls.
Pretty sure most kids understand you can't just take 2 weeks off.
Yeah. I'm not even in IB and I've been stressing about asking for 3 days off around Christmas time for a family trip... the balls (or ignorance) to be an intern and ask for 2 weeks...
Little tidbits like this continually reaffirm my decision not to go into banking/finance. I’m in MC and my office just shuts down the week of Christmas. No PTO, no anxiety about spending negligible amounts of time with family.. sheesh. Hope it works out for you, dude(tte).
No offer, easy.
Couldn't repair this guy's career with Flextape... that's a lotta damage.
It's not when you have plates in rotation.
Even at thousands of miles away.
MGTOW red pills are the antidote
"Asking for a friend"
It's #InternSZN
Totally insane. "So you said you are an investment banker?" "Well, I was for a few weeks.." "Oh now what do you do?" "Well... nothing I guess." "............"
There is a very high concentration of hot chicks in Italy. You are lucky.
Ahahaha what a story!
I gotta go see about a girl
Complete insanity. I’m wrapping up managing/mentoring a cohort at a BB. Two asked for time off - 1 for 2 days and another for 4 days. Both had serious reasons (death and illness in the family). They had to go through a massive list of approvals and verifications for these handful of days. I can’t imagine what would happen when someone asks for 2 weeks, especially for a stupid reason. Most likely would be dropped from the program.
He's going to get a lot more than two weeks off.
Some of the interns at my m&a group also asked for holidays arguing is summer and is slow in August at the desk. They've got a point tbh but I did not ask for any. They were granted them, maybe i am the fool in the area xd
You’re all wrong here.
This guy is off slaying mad hot Italian pussy and you’re all a bunch of losers sat at your desk without the energy to even crack a boner at the end of the night.
Game over.
The plot twist here is if this "online" girlfriend of Romeo happens to be some 40+ year old dude.
Pwned.
Not if he’s into that

It would be interesting to know who's idea this is - his or his girlfriend's. If his girlfriend is trying to push this trip during his internship, she may be shit testing him to see if he'd prioritize her over his career.
tell him to take a weekend to see her at the end of the internship. Give him a couple of days off. Enough for a conjugal visit.
But certainly in a 10 week internship can't take 2 weeks off. Bitch please.
perhaps just laugh continuously. Don't stop until he leaves. Keep laughing hysterically. He'll get the message.
How Romeo met your mother
This example is where the line gets drawn at a lot of corporate/banking jobs. Not only does one to be able to do/comprehend the work, but they also need to know how to act. It's a different mindset than some people are use to.
