Investment banking internship without US visa
Hey everyone!
I know this may not concern too many of you, but does anyone know whether typically your application gets thrown out right away if you say that you are not authorized to work in the US? Most applications ask the question and also ask whether you will need sponsorship in the future. Are there any banks (BB or boutiques) you know of that would take summer analysts that do not have work permits to work in the US?
Thanks a lot,
Gini
Hey!
If you are in school in USA, you can use your OPT for summer Analyst position. But if you are not in school and do not have a Visa, I dont think any bank would sponsor an Analyst for Summer but the BB's definitely sponsor for full time.
jayzd is right, there would be no point for a bank to pay for your H1b just for those 10 weeks if you don't have OPT or CPT. so I really doubt you'd find a bank that would do that for SA. but if you are in school in the US, then you can use your OPT. all BB's and many (I'd say less than half) of non-BB's sponsor as well. from my own experience, Wachovia and BofA sponsored last year, but this year Wachovia didn't sponsor from the very beginnig and BofA let me schedule an interview with them and the night before they called me and asked me if I had a work permit. After I said I didn't, they cancelled my interview.
Anther good idea when you're rejected by a US bank because of not having a work permit is to ask them to forward your resume to their European/Asian office. I applied for a position with a bank in the UK and never got invited to an interview. Their US office interviewed me and liked me, but they said they didn't sponsor H1b, so I asked them to forward my resume to their UK office and I was able to get an interview with them that way, even after being rejected when I applied directly.
Good luck!
Thanks for your relpy! That's exactly what I thought. Last year I still would have had the OPT, but now not anymore. Man, now I wish I had done the summer analyst position last year. I guess applying to Europe or Asia would be my only option then...but I am glad to hear that they do sponsor H1B visas for full-time positions. Or who knows....maybe I'll win the Green Card lottery this time around...haha

International Student (F1-Visa status) & SA positions (Originally Posted: 01/10/2008)
I am an international student currently attending a non-target school (Southern Methodist University) in Texas and was wondering what my chances are when it comes to SA positions in the IBD of BBs.
I'll graduate Dec '08 with a BBA in Finance and BS in Economics. I'm in the business school's honors program, I have a solid GPA (4.0 in both my majors, 3.99 overall) and pretty diverse ECs.
I have been called for a few i-views before for HF, PE, and Consulting but only the ones where the internship is unpaid accept me (my current financial situation requires me to have a paying internship). I admit I messed up my first couple of i-views but I've been doing well since (practice makes perfect). When I mention I am on a student Visa, some of the places have told me they could not hire me, others just do not say anything back after the interview.
Now I have 2 interviews in less than a week with JPM and Merril's Oil & Gas division and possibly a third one with Credit Suisse and wanted to see if you guys knew a lot of international kids (on student Visa) that have scored SA positions.
I heard it is easier for international students to get FT offers than internships or SA gigs, is it true?
And how will I get a FT offer if I cant get any prior experience in ibanking through SA programs?
I appreciate your feedback,
Cheers!
Ah, and by the way, I guaranty you I am not "socially-challenged" or a complete bookworm.
Don't mention to them that you have an F1 Visa. You can do an internship under CPT. If they want to hire you then they will under OPT for a while and then apply for a H1. International students have as a good a chance as others do in getting internships in investment banking with all sorts of firms.
The problem is i need to mention it, in order to be able to work. At least at our school, the company has to sign a term of responsability (it's around 3 pages long) which works as a contract between the school and the company.
I feel like they don't want to go through the assle of sending the paperwork to be checked by their legal department for someone who might be joining just for a short amount of time.
Hopefuly you're right though.
I'm thinking BBs (as opposed to boutiques) might be more receptive to international students. I mean, it's more probable for you to want to stay with a JPM or GS after your internship than with most boutique i-banks.
thx godofsmallthings
banking is one of those few jobs that embraces foreign students. Get the offer first, then ask HR to sign the papers. It should not be a problem. They have tons of foreign kids working on CPTs and OPTs.
Also, in general its harder to score an internship than a FT , IMO....not specifically for international students
Thanks ghosht,
i never tried to do it that way. i guess i just didnt want them to think I was hiding the info from them.
So I should not mention it at all (for example on a "tell me about yourself" type of question) that I am international?
I ask this because i feel it adds some interest to my background, its a good topic starter, it even excuses me for some minor mispronunciation issues... the setback, however, is that it eventually leads to the question "So... are you authorized to work in the US?" hehe
of course you are going to mention it. it ties into your liking of banking because you are foreign, and in banking you will deal with a lot of international things.
but when you are interviewing with an MD, and when you mention that you are from XYZ country, and the first question he pops is regarding your work authorization, something is amiss. Maybe you should not work for such a sh*t bank in the first place.
dont mention it. do you advertise all your weaknesses with a drumroll? no.
learn to put a positive spell on everything. it will come in handy even when doing your analyst job in the future ;-).
if they do bring up work authorization, which i highly doubt any legit banker would, explain that its a relatively easy process, with thousands being done every year by all wall st banks.
Well, its almost 6am on this side of the world so i need to go sleep for a bit.
Thanks a lot for the input ghosht. I got some realy good pointers from it and some renewed confidence as well :)
cheers all
US Banks that hire Canadians for internship (J-1 Visa) (Originally Posted: 09/11/2014)
Hi,
Any idea which banks other than BB that sponsor visas for Canadian Citizens for summer associate positions?
Thanks!
Yes, I would like to know as well.
US Internships for CAN citizens (Originally Posted: 02/22/2011)
Hey Everyone,
I was wondering if any Canadians have had luck landing internships in IB, PE, or ER in the US. I've been filling out the online application forms for a number of firms but still no response. Do you think that the fact that I need a Visa to work in the US is turning them off? Any pointers on how I may be able to increase my chances of getting an interview? Any advice/comments will be appreciated.
Are you a student in the U.S. / on F-1?
bump
what school do you go to?
Um tons of Canadians, like half the Finance majors at my school. Where do you go to?
Some companies do not recruit international students for internships because these companies do not sponsor worker visa for entry level employees, so if you are applying to these companies, you are obviously knocking on the wrong door.
Online applications are a waste of the energy in your fingers. If you're at a school with OCR (which I presume you're not) interviews are conducted on campus. If otherwise you have to start networking with alumni from your school 6-8 months in advance to develop connections helping you apply. Online apps are basically just for show.
I'm at the University of Toronto. I wouldn't say its a 'target school' for finance. There is OCR but its primarily for engineering positions as thats what the school is primarily known for. I now realize that online applications are a waste of time...
