Is SEA (south east asia) MBB worth it?

Any insights into exit opps, working hours, culture? In particular anything about Singapore/KL office would be helpfulOnly thing I'm sure of is the salary (not USD-based until right after post-mba titles)

I know that prestige varies by region. For example PwC is considered more prestigious than MBB in Australia. Weird, I know. But still, it may be the case that a Big 4 or OW, LEK is more well regarded than MBB in your specific geography. So, I would try and be cognizant of that.

I'm Australian and this is absolutely not true for PwC or S& lol. MBB are undisputed leaders in strategy consulting in the AU region, with EY PJP behind them and everyone else very distant.

P.s. Take my advice with big grain of salt because I have direct or non-direct exposure to the locations.

So, your question asks whether MBB in South-East Asia worth it.

MBB are high-class firms. They are well respected and well-known in corporate sector. And they are main feeders to top MBAs. The job is mainly strategic consulting. So, if you would like to be a consultant it is the top choice. If you want to work in Banking or Tech, then it is a different story.

The work have long hours and is not considered an easy type of job. About the culture, I suppose that each of MBB firms try to maintain the level of culture the same in all locations. However, in Asian countries (not counting Australia as it is not Asian country but still close to the region), work culture is more intense and people tend to work harder and more. In countries like China, Japan, Korea it is like that. I suppose that in South-East Asia (Indonesia, Vietnam, Philippines, Malaysia, Thailand) culture may be less intense however still people will work hard. In Singapore, it is I think a mix of both, as the office has European/US and Asian consultants.

About the pay I don't have numbers but I suppose MBB adjusts its salary to the regions so that every consultant despite the location get a similar real wage (price level indixed). Usually, pay is higher than most industries and if compared with bonuses and stock compensation is slightly lower than high-finance and tech (But it can depend due to location)

I assume the job will depend upon the geography and location:

Australia - Metals & Mining

Philippines, Indonesia, Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia - Tourism, Government/Public + Oil&Gas for Indonesia and Malaysia

Hong-Kong, Singapore - Finance + Logistics/Transportation

Taiwan - Semiconductors and advanced manufacturing

Industries like banking, retail are present in most locations.

  • as previous comment states each country has its own choice for firms. In Middle East for example, Strategy& (former Booz) is the strongest as far as I know.

Hope these help.

It may be because MBB offices are not large in Vietnam like in some developing countries. Meanwhile, Big 4 is pretty much covers most parts of the world. Additionally, MBB in general does not recruit a lot of people per year, and are not present in the campus of every university. However, one can see Big 4 at various university events and they recruit quite large amount of people. So, Big 4 has more prestige in Vietnam and in other developing countries because most people are not aware of the existence of MBB and pure strategy consulting. (Big 4 does a lot of things from audit to risk advisory)

wouldn't say that's the case - most big institutions (masan, tpg, the govt, son kim) are clients of mbb and rely on them for pe due diligence/strategic advice. in vietnam, mbb are growing rapidly and attracting the best talents at neu, rmit etc.

big 4 are more for valution/deal & finance auditing, so the work done is less ‘sexy’ and ‘prestigious’ and therefore less attractive for the best students at top schools in vn

at least for vietnam, hours are usually 830am-930/1030pm on the weekdays. weekends tend to be protected; in the weekend, if you have to work, it would be three hours top.

Starting at OW SEA soon and has worked under MBB consultants before, I can pass on more info if you wish. MBB pay well and hours are pretty intense, even in SEA. Pay is decent, but can vary based off your prior experience/degree type (if you're entry level) but all falls within a range tied to the real wage level. McKinsey and BCG are the most well known names in most of the countries besides SG, and hire typically more people than Bain.
