Jason Collins
http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/magazine/news/20130429/jason-collins-g…
This is pretty badass. Don't want to post the entire piece here, but here's the last paragraph:
Jason CollinsSome people insist they've never met a gay person. But Three Degrees of Jason Collins dictates that no NBA player can claim that anymore. Pro basketball is a family. And pretty much every family I know has a brother, sister or cousin who's gay. In the brotherhood of the NBA, I just happen to be the one who's out.
Personally, I think he's a badass. It takes balls to do something like this. There's a decent amount of uncertainty on how he will be received by other players, though I think he will get a warm welcome.
I've got this guys back, whatever that amounts to.
I don't think anyone will be getting on his back about it, at 7 feet tall. That is one large man, gay or not.
Great respect for him coming out. Just hoping some team will pick him up, just to ensure someone wont shit on him for outing himself when he wasnt with a team.
WHO GIVES A SHIT. Play the fucking game you get paid millions of dollars to play and keep your dick to yourself. That goes for straight players too.
Ja$on Collin$ y'all.
In all seriousness, while he'll make a lot of money, I agree with OP in that he's doing something courageous. Most pro athletes (outside of golf and tennis, maybe) don't exactly come from environments where homosexuality is accepted. He'll help pave the way for other athletes who want to do the same.
I had never heard of him before today. Imagine if it was LeBron instead...
I think it's a step in the right direction.
Agreed.
I don't know why he's worried about coming out of the closet when I see the way Dwayne Wade and Russell Westbrook dress.
Good God, how tasteless.
He will probably make more coming out than hiding it. Book deals, a future movie, multiple show appearances, motivational speaking.
I'm happy for him and all, but the fact that this isn't seen as a total non-event just shows how much further we have to go with shit like this. So he likes dudes, who cares? Shouldn't even be a story. But props to him and on the bright side it is a step in the right direction. Hopefully one day we'll be at the point where we don't notice that the quarterback is black or the point guard is gay or the goalie is Asian, but instead just think "oh yah, some people are that way, that's just how it is" and move on with our lives.
There's still a shitload of anti-homosexual sentiment in the ghetto and boonies. This could help in both places.
Just earlier this year this happened http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/blog/nfl-rapidreports/21624342/49ers-chris…
Openly gay major professional athletes is a huge step for the LGBT community. I agree with DM, professional athletes coming out can impact entirely new demographics. Jason Collins did something really important today.
Also, he might get a NIKE sponsorship out of it.
Oh wow how wonderful!!! I hope more players show the strength to do the same. How courageous!!! Yayyyy!!!
I mean... should be be surprised he knows how to handle some balls?
Hahahahahaha!
check out the google images on "russell westbrook post game"
I really hope they fire Chris Broussard.
Disagree, ESPN had to have known how he was going to respond. I personally agree with him, but even if that weren't the case ESPN should be the ones taking heat over it, not this Broussard fellow.
That sleeveless hoodie thing Westbrook wore the other day was just so bad.
Gotta love the fake tolerance. Dude comes out and a guy on ESPN supports him, but disagrees with it because his religion and the mob wants to silence him. One way tolerance people.
Gotta love black people in America citing the Bible as a reason to be against homosexuality.
Ahhh, more intolerance. The guy simply said he personally thinks it is a sin. I suppose no one is allowed to have a personal opinion one way or another.
If we are going to celebrate people having the freedom to come out in public we should also celebrate people having the ability to hold a personal opinion against it. Tolerance means tolerating different people. It doesn't mean forced acceptance.
Also, no need to bring race into this. People of all races owned slaves. Race baiting is just horrible and it is sad you try and bring it up.
Haha, you searched through Google to look for the first scripture in the Bible supporting slavery. You probably have never opened the book in your life because you would know that God was talking to the Hebrews (people of Israel), not some lazy greedy confederates who just wanted wanted to make money off cotton.
I didn't realize Broussard was being asked to discuss rape, slavery, sacrifices. He was being asked to talk about homosexuality and he said he thinks it is a sin. Real simple.
Suppose he didn't bring up religion. Suppose he simply thinks unions between two people are for procreation and the biological urge to reproduce and that he disagrees with homosexuality. Suppose he flipped a coin and said it landed on heads and he disagreed. There is zero tolerance for any opinion, no matter how politely expressed, that goes against the mob.
Since you need help understanding what tolerance is, here is a link.
http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/tolerance
a fair, objective, and permissive attitude toward those whose opinions, practices, race, religion, nationality, etc., differ from one's own; freedom from bigotry.
My definition of tolerance should be everyone's definition.
Why would I suppose any of those things you mentioned? He thinks homosexuality is a sin because the Bible says it is. The Bible condones and forbids lots of things, many of which no one takes seriously in modern Western society - why should homosexuality be any different?
Saying that someone is leading a life of sin (especially when broadcast on national TV) doesn't seem very tolerant to me, but I guess I could be wrong.
This was bound to incite ANT's wrath.
In other news, has anyone ever heard of this guy before ? Was/is he good?
You don't stay in the NBA for 12 years if you don't have something to offer.
So you can't disgree with someone on TV now? This dudes religious interpretation says homosexuality is a sin. His opinion.
I suppose in 2013 America that the word SIN is super powerful and can melt through walls.
And this doesn't incite my wrath. I could care less. I simply think that tolerance means respecting all opinions, including ones that are unpopular or that disagree what the PC police think are correct.
This dude's [very selective] religious interpretation is based on a book written by primitive men who also claimed that a donkey could speak and a man lived to almost 1,000 years of age. I'm sorry if I don't take my worldview from such a farce.
His opinion is based on a ridiculously outdated text... Everyone may be entitled to an opinion, but I am not required to respect it.
Wonderfully intolerant description of an important text and religious book.
I'd suggest you learn what respect truly is. Your intolerance is the same as every other bigot out there.
My opinion is that the Sun revolves around the Earth and I want people to respect my opinion.
I'm pretty sure duff entitled the guy to his opinion but also cited that for various (objective) reasons it was a stupid one. Not sure where the intolerance is in that?
And this is what happens. You ask someone what they think, they say that they think it is a sin and that is their personal opinion and the angry mob descends with insults, attacks and defamatory responses. Intolerance from the "tolerant".
I agree wholeheartedly. It seems these days you're only entitled to voice your opinion if you're on the PC side of the debate.
Example:
The founder of chick-fil - a lobbies against gay marriage and the mayor of Chicago threatens to block him from doing business in the city, but the founder of Starbucks verbally berates someone opposing the company's pro-gay marriage stance and he gets a standing ovation.
Respect goes both ways.
One of those people decided to limit a human being's rights and the other chose to attempt to help expand them... I think one did something commendable while the other did something despicable.
However, I disagree with Chicago government's threats... government needs to stay out of religious debates entirely. Chik-Fil-A should be allowed to do business wherever the hell its founders want it to go, so long as it follows existing laws.
Just like they're welcome to voice their opinions on what's a sin, I'm welcome to voice my opinion of what's stupid. Just because I think they're idiots doesn't mean I'm going to start bombing churches. I'm tolerant of religion, I'm also critical of it. I think I am objective in being critical of most religions (objective meaning logical).
Don't have to like it to tolerate it.
This isn't a government issue we are talking about. We are talking about the media. Furthermore, you can think what you want, but I would hope you would see the difference between what you think and voicing an opinion with the same voracity. Your thoughts are religiously intolerant. Hate crimes and prejudiced behavior isn't just against someones sexual preference or race.
Religious arguments spiral out of control because people are intolerance, show no respect and hurl insults. Religion is about faith, hence why it cannot be proven. Real easy to believe in shit you can see or prove. This is beyond the point.
The reality is there is only one allowed and accepted point of view in today's media and world. Anything disagreeing with this is met with claims of bigotry, ignorance or a simple dismissing as if disagreeing with the mob is an IQ issue. Tolerance means accepting that some people are different and also realizing that some religious see things as a sin or disapprove. This is also beyond religion.
I personally think having 10 wives is kind of fucked up. No one gives a shit if I say this. One day Mormons will have an anti-discrimination group and lobbying group and that statement will qualify me as mini-Hitler because of my "intolerance".
The only thing I am against is hypocrisy. People are allowed to dislike things, to disapprove of things or to say they don't think something is right. This doesn't mean they are bigoted, ignorant or intolerant. Simply means they have a different opinion. This is true tolerance and we are far, far from this.
My thoughts are not religiously intolerant. Most of my friends and family are religious. I fully tolerate their beliefs and NEVER bring up my atheism on religious matters unless asked. Even then, I tread carefully. By virtue of being an atheist, I don't believe that the Bible was the word of God, nor do I believe in a religious God. Are you atheist-intolerant because you're a Christian? I sure hope not, otherwise the vast majority of the country is out to get me.
I don't like the idea that one can pick and choose sins from the Bible. That, to me, opens the argument for bigotry even in the face of religion. Why is it okay to work on the Sabbath, but not for two men/women to have sex? Why is it okay to wear clothing made of different fabrics, but not okay for two men/women to get married? That's my problem with using the Bible as a defense: people make it very personal and just choose the things they want and throw away the ones they don't. I know countless Christians that have had sex before marriage or have parents who have been through multiple divorces, yet frown upon homosexuality. That, to me, is absolutely baffling.
Now, I agree that the media goes into ridiculous PC frenzies over stupid shit... completely, entirely, wholeheartedly agree. This whole gay thing is a human rights issue to me, so that's why I'm so harsh on it. I don't care what people do in the privacy of their own homes, nor do I care what gender you're attracted to. As long as you don't infringe on my rights or my quality of life, go fuck any willing human being for all I care.
However, if you want to stray from religion and homosexuality and talk about the NAAFA (National Association to Advance Fat Acceptance), I'm all ears. This is the kind of PC bullshit that irritates the hell out of me. I'm fine with someone being a little chubby, but I will never condone or accept obesity unless it's caused by extraordinary illness. I will never accept food addiction as a societal norm, just like I won't accept a meth addict. Those fuckers raise my healthcare costs and fill up hospitals. Alcoholics aren't given new livers for a reason: we don't condone addicts.
Btw...can someone please define what "sin" is? I hear anti-gay religious types throw this word around a lot, but I'm not quite sure they know what they mean. I'm guessing it has something to do with a soul. That special invisible thing that people talk about.
Wake up, folks. You live and then you die. Try and have fun in the interim and not be a miserable shithead arguing in favor of anti-gay bigoted morons. It's not like any of you actually respect those assclowns to begin with.
TNA raises strong questions and people who don't agree are just avoiding them. So I'll be another voice and ask. Why should one be punished for an opinion even if it isn't PC? Because many of you are calling for Mr.Broussard had where he merely just stated his own personal opinions...he didn't say anything about Collins not being allowed to be gay he just doesn't agree with it. So why does it matter?
