Learning how to write research
How long does it take an ER Associate to become good at actually writing updates and reports? i.e. to learn what meat needs to go into the research as opposed to just regurgitating earnings or drawing projections off of a model?
One Associate told me they worked on a 100 page report for their analyst. I can't imagine coming up with ten pages of research let alone 100..
Any thoughts?
Graphs / charts/ tables. My feeling is that it's tough to be a good equity research associate. You have a lot of companies that you're expected to know about, and things are very dynamic (changing at least quarterly, often much more frequently)
Those 100 pages is only about 20 pages of actual writing. The rest is charts, tables, examples, pictures or excerpts we take from the economics or strategy teams. Writing is easy as all of your thesis and main points are in the first page. Everything after that is the reasoning mixed in with graphs.
