London PE Recruiting Questions

Hey team,

Hope you're having a decent Friday ahead of long weekend. Had a few questions about PE recruiting in London:

1.) How long into your analyst stint do headhunters start to reach out + when would you expect interviews and offers to be rolled out?

Appears senior analysts typically leave after around 1 year and 8-10 months in banking - how many months prior would they have received the offer?

2.) Is the compensation in Growth Equity vs Traditional Buyouts going to differ substantially at top funds?

3.) What is the typical range of compensations at Upper Middle Market - MegaFund PE?

I'm in IB currently and there is quite a lot of transparency in what we earn in this industry, but comparatively little information is available for PE, and the WSO company data base seems a bit shit for anywhere outside of the US

4.) I am on a skilled workers VISA for my current IB job - if I get onto a top PE programme that is willing to sponsor me, will i typically have enough time to complete the immigration processes required for a new work visa?

1) usually before you hit the 1 year mark so 8-10months in

2) GE will pay less than PE, skewed towards the bonus, base would be roughly the same

3) broadly in line with Banking but with outliers above

4) that’s an issue, very few funds are willing to sponsor, in fact it’s one of the unavoidable questions HHs will ask you when they first meet you.

Thank you for the response - could I please clarify a couple things?

RE Q1.) If headhunters start reaching out around 8 months in, could I ask when youd expect interviews + offers to roll out and when the start dates would typically be? As so many people seem to leave after close to two years

RE Q4.) Do you know whether UMM/MFs would typically be willing to sponsor? There appears to be tons of random Post MBA Americans etc who work in places like Bain Capital, Carlyle etc.

Is it wishful thinking that firms may be more willing to sponsor given brexit? Surely they aren’t just gonna stop hiring mainland Europeans

My take on Q4 is that the question should be framed from a perspective of whether you can speak any european languages. UMM and above can usually sponsor if so. For LMM and below, they usually can't and language is not much of a consideration (mostly UK, Big 4 hires)

Timing wise you're fine. They'll pay for a priority route which means you'll get yours in 5 days

1) usually from the 1yr mark and thereafter. People leave just after 2 years as funds are flexible to let you get your bonus some times. There is no “set” recruiting period, that said, most funds hire a lot in Sep-Dec ahead of a Jan start for whatever reason.
4) not sure how this applies to US folks or post brexit but this was the norm - EU people didn’t need visas thus most firms just did not care about hiring people that needed sponsorship. Not sure how this has/will change.

Bump, I’m pretty sure the point by Pan European on timeline isn’t correct.

Have heard from friends that HHs reach out once you’re about 6 months in
