Lunch with Kevin O'Leary

Hello,

I will be going to a small lunch reception on Wednesday, where Kevin O'Leary will be present, and I'll have the opportunity to talk to him face to face.

I am a senior in high school, and want to fully utilize this opportunity!

How do I bring up the idea of offering my unpaid services as a summer intern at O'Leary Funds? What else could I do to make the best of this event?

Should I offer to take him out to lunch one on one to discuss opportunities?

I have an opportunuty to take over an insurance brokerage (valued at $4MM) if I can pay for the company. Would it be appropriate to lightly bring up the idea to Kevin, as he is an Angel Investor.

Thoughts?

Thanks.

Elevator Speech: what career path you want, why you'd be amazing at it, and how you're looking for an unpaid internship.

I'd avoid the investment proposal, tbh...

Unless you have a significant amount of experience in the insurance industry, I highly doubt Mr. O'Leary would be supportive of you running that company.

Top management that doesn't understand its business has caused a lot of companies to close their doors in recent memory.

"The power of accurate observation is commonly called cynicism by those who have not got it." - George Bernard Shaw

He would have ZERO interest in funding some insurance broker. Absolutely ZERO, do not make yourself look stupid by bringing this up. If you want to impress tell him an idea you have for a business startup or something.

No dont "ask to take him to lunch"....hes not having a high school kid take him to lunch dude, youre going to come across like a real annoying kid. Just enjoy the lunch, ask good questions....

We've got half a million shares in the bag!

Let's be honest. If I was Mr O'Leary and was approached by a 17 or 18 year old kid that wanted to buy a $4mm brokerage, I would laugh in his face. Honestly I would be more apt to put my mentally handicapped son-in-law in charge- at least he would listen to me in exchange for some hard candies.

Also a $4mm brokerage? Wtf is insured for so little? If a life insurance policy is $250k-$1mm they aren't representing many people since they want to be cost-neutral or positive with their ventures.

Reality hits you hard, bro...

MMB,

Can't say whether the OP's a troll or not, but the valuation of an insurance brokerage would be based on its annual premium income and not the face value of policies in place. Having owned an insurance brokerage at one time (life and health), it's not outside the realm of possibility for someone just out of high school to make a horse race of it. The business certainly isn't rocket science, and if you can check boxes on an application and match the right age bracket to the correct premium, you can be successful in that business. Of course, it would be highly unusual for someone so young to do it, but there's nothing really precluding someone 18 or older (min. age for a license) from doing it.

lol kevin o'leary is kind of a schmuck.

that being said, he's a big shot. you better have one hell of a reason as to why he should take any sort of interest in you. chances are, hes not gonna remember you past the luncheon so you need to get his card, and the contact info of someone else at his firm and then follow up with them saying seomthing like 'kevin o'leary referred me to you'

Thanks for the comments everyone! I'm going to play my cards in that we have a lot in common. Cottaging, interest in cars, finance, etc. And see how it goes from there. I will be giving him my business card and hopefully it impresses him enough to contact me down the road.

I am not a troll, I dont know why everyone is so quick to call each other trolls on this site. Highschoolers can be interested in finance too!

Oh and for the record, I would finish my commerce degree before I took over the company. My purpose in explaining him my plan now is for him to have confidence about my visions and goals, the heart aspect.

Good luck. There was a time when I thought the same way you did. The best advice I can give you is to make sure you always have everything in writing as there will be people out there that will try to pull a fast one on you because you are young. Best of Luck!
