Lying about race and another diversity discussion

IDK. What do you guys think.

I’m an Asian. I came from a low-income single-parent background with an abusive parent. I’m a first gen American. I had no role models. I had no info about the American education system or college. (I personally don’t think the following is relevant) but back in Asia, my race suffered genocide and suffering for hundreds of years from white people, just like many Latinos and African-Americans. This is for those people who will bring up that argument.

Yet, I managed to get into a target school as an unhooked applicant but no one actually cares because I’m just another Asian. I had an aDVaNtAgE. Now, there’s all these diversity opportunities available in college. SEO, McKinsey Freshman, etc. it’s just so tempting to check the Hispanic box. (I fit in appearance-wise). Does anyone seriously want to argue I don’t deserve it when the most of these people getting in are kids who’re white as hell being part-Hispanic or black kids from Choate and Deerfield? idk man. I’m probably not gonna lie because 30 years down the line I don’t wanna question where I would be otherwise, but I’m not sure it would be wrong to do it in my situation otherwise.

American Common Law is built on the principal that there is a Higher Law and laws can be unjust. Consequently, unjust laws may be disobeyed in the Anglo-American system. As MLK said, “One has a moral responsibility to obey just laws. Conversely, one has a moral responsibility to disobey unjust laws”

We’re not talking about laws here, but rules and social constructs The point however is similar.

I feel the struggle man. Companies and schools focus more on diversity of skin color more than diversity of upbringing/background. This stems from blacks and Hispanics having a disproportionately tougher upbringing and less opportunities available to them. However, the approach was too broad, and that was partly by design to keep things simple. For example, I’m middle eastern (a minority group in the US) but we get lumped into “Caucasian” on all job and school forms. I definitely didn’t have the same upbringing or opportunities available to me as my white friends and got have experienced a heck of a lot of discrimination. Also, for Asians, Asia is a HUGE continent, so there’s no way you can lump all Asians into one category. The current categories also don’t account for the other factors that contribute to diversity than just race. For example, those who come from lower class backgrounds, immigrant backgrounds, or some sort of distressed background like you. None of that gets taken into consideration, which is understandable since it’ll make everything more complicated, but is also a fundamentally unfair system and approach.

Anyways, as my dad says: "life's unfair and then you die". Just gotta roll with it.

 

Based on your description, you fall under the definition of minority as per the United Nations. Unless they specify a specific minority (Black, Latin American, Aboriginal,...) You should be good to use minority.

 

If you are already enrolled in the school, I would be honest.   I am not sure what specifically you mean by diversity opportunities?  If some diversity opportunity does not want you because you are Asian, then it not worth the hassle to be part of that group.  I would not want to be part of a group that does not want me.

 

I think he is talking about placements, internships and other stuff that will come up. From what I have seen they ask detailed questions regarding minority status, i.e. which minority are you. There are different programs for different reasons.

But which one of these programs are actually F2F right now?

would be useful to understand how competitive these programs are and which advantages OP would have.

we had a minority candidate once who ticked the "AA" box and he got in. He was more than capable of achieving all of his results with or without any programs. either way, he crafted a great career.

 

If it's applying to a job or a diversity program at a specific company I have seen lots of people get away with it so you'll be fine. They are not really allowed to ask about your background like that. They just need to tick the boxes for their shareholder presentations. If it's applying to something like SEO then things get a bit more dicey since they'll usually ask a bit more about your family and background

 

Diversity rules, programs, laws, etc. are, by and large, immoral. You have a responsibility to do everything in your power to undermine them. That may mean lying about your ethnic background--well, so be it. The diversity programs are illegitimate and you have no responsibility to do anything that preserves the programs' appearance of legitimacy. In fact, those who endorse diversity programs (as some in this very thread do) are the immoral ones.

Tick the box. Tick the LGBT box. Roll with it. What are they going to do, ask for a 23&Me report or your porn history? You’re a bi Hispanic now. Don’t change your attitude. The beauty of intersectionality and identity politics is that it’s an endless loop. No one can question you on your heritage directly because doing so is racist. Sexuality can be fluid, so just because you date girls doesn’t mean you aren’t bi as well. Don’t worry about anyone else except yourself and your future family. Just keep quiet, and don’t say anything to anyone.
