M7 vs Top 15 MBA for Consulting

I just got admitted to an M7 (not HSW) and a Top 15. Both place about 1/3 of the class into consulting, and I have 100% GI Bill, so cost is not really an issue. Are my chances of landing a consulting offer that much more improved if I attend an M7? Personal reasons + location are why I'm considering the Top 15 over the M7.

If Ross and Kellogg are both placing a 1/3 of the class into consulting, then where is the significant difference coming from? Fewer going to MBB vs T2 firms?

Kellogg published firm-specific numbers in their most recent employment report, but I do not know if it includes the MMM and 1Y program as well. I've also heard that a lot of Kellogg's 1Y students are from and returning to MBB. Ross published numbers for Mckinsey and BCG only, since they were top employers. Looking at the numbers, I calculated about 12% of the class at Ross and about 16% of the class at Kellogg is going to MBB.

OP, if Kellogg and Ross are your choices, go to Kellogg. Arguably the best school for consulting.

The truth is you're the weak. And I'm the tyranny of evil men. But I'm tryin', Ringo. I'm tryin' real hard to be the shepherd.

Are you "MBB or bust"? If Ross didn't consider Bain a major employer, then that might be all you need to know. Without having looked at Kellogg's employment report I've no doubt they included numbers for all 3 given their reputation as an MBB feeder.

If you're not MBB or bust - generally a good idea since a significant number WILL strike out within such a narrow range-then it really doesn't matter in this case and either school will be fine. I'm assuming you've got great stats to go along w/ that military profile, which should get you on most closed interview lists.

FWIW Ross is legit top 10; certainly closer to that than top 15 IMHO.

I just don't see either of Yale or Stern being ahead of Ross in terms of placements, salaries, endowments, employer diversity, recruiter scores, etc. If anything, the 10th spot typically rotates between the 3, and maybe throw in UVA.

The biggest difference is with BCG and Bain.

McKinsey is large enough, and faces more churn, such that they simply need to recruit at a wider range of schools.

Bain is the smallest of the bunch and they do less MBA-level hiring, proportionally, than BCG and McK do. Therefore, they don't need to scatter across business schools as much as McK does.

BCG is kind of in the middle (as they usually are in so many ways).

It also depends on which MBA business schools">m7, and which Top 15.

If the MBA business schools">m7 is one of the two Chicago schools, for example, I would say there is going to be a noticeable difference in your odds of getting an interview.

If the top 15 is, say, Darden, I would say it punches above its weight and you should have good odds.

Remember that there are two elements: seats (getting the interview, which is what most of this logic is about) as well as case-prep (where I think Darden would probably be quite good).

The truth is you're the weak. And I'm the tyranny of evil men. But I'm tryin', Ringo. I'm tryin' real hard to be the shepherd.

Office preferences matter as well. An MBA business schools">M7 like Kellogg open up the door to any office. Ross consulting recruiting probably places students into slightly more regional offices like Detroit, Minneapolis, etc.

Not saying no one from Kellogg goes to smaller office or that no one from Ross goes to SF/NYC but this explains the apparent disparity.
