I did a back office internship at Magnetar a few summers ago. It's located in Evanston, IL and at the time had around $7 billion in AUM. It's a multi-strategy hedge fund that focused on traditional long/short equity, event driven equity, derivative, and reinsurance strategies when I interned with the firm.

I'm hoping someone can fill in some blanks about the fund and the position.
Here's what I know:
Magnetar Capital
Founded in 2005 by a Citadel superstar. Excess returns came from great execution of high risk investments. I think they had 4+ billion in AUM at the end of 2007.
Research Assistant description was pretty generic but it mentioned sell-side research role . That's what threw me off since this is a HF.
Any more insight on the fund or position?
Overall seems like an amazing opportunity for a college kid to land.

I don't have anything to add regarding the position itself, but it shouldn't be too hard to find some basic info on Magnetar by just googling around. Their website actually provides some info on the firm and their main strategies, and they were one of the funds to place a big bet on short housing pre-crash. There's some good stuff on Pro Publica about its trade: http://www.propublica.org/article/all-the-magnetar-trade-how-one-hedge-…
