Making that tiny interests/hobbies section more interesting? (guns, hotrods, and MMA)

Hey guys

What are your opinions on the right way to make that small section on the bottom of the resume sound a bit more interesting(for corp finance is it is different than in other areas)? Or if you guys can share a sample from your resume that would be great!

For instance, I like restoring pre-smog era cars and instead of "Restoring Cars" is there something I can do to make that sounds a bit better? How about "Post-War Era Car Restoration" or how about "Car Restoration (51' Chevy Coupe and 54' Belair)."

What are your opinions on firearms on resume? I go to the range quite often and I wanted to put something like "Marksmanship" or something along those lines on resume. But I can see how putting something like that on a resume could be off-putting to a lot of people. Archery I understand but firearms could be an issue.

Thanks

TechBankingKeep the guns off...that's too much of a hot button issue right now, and some liberal might auto ding you to take a political stand (seriously).

That is what I was afraid of. I really think it is different though and I wonder if there would be some alternative wording that can be done to make it seem fine. "Plinking," "Trap & Skeet Training," etc.

@sDSP Thanks!

I've got hunting on mine, but I live in a pretty redneck city and apply to oil related positions, so if anybody's gonna be okay with it they will be (stereotypes I know)

So I guess consider the crowd you're applying too. Also like you touched on, "Trap Shooting" would be much beter than "Firearms". One is a legitimate sport, the other draws images of trailer park boys surrounded by AR's to mind.

... but watch out

if you write 'going out with friends..' they could interprete it as 'the guy likes to party hard and drinking a lot and he will strange at mondays'

"Going out with friends" is one of those things that analysts interviewing you definitely want to hear but the senior guys don't. I'd save that answer for when you're in the interview and an analyst or associate asks you what you like to do. "Spending time with" or "Hanging out with" are much better responses as well.

My current interests involve blowing money fast, fast cars, and debauchery. So I need some other things to occupy my time. My alter ego enjoys literature, architecture, gardening, traveling, and the arts but those seem boring and quite standard to list, lol.

Sports, social events, anything involving Sun Valley because all upper management probably own a house there. For example, "Skiing in Sun Valley."

"Hard work beats talent when talent doesn't work hard. But if talent works hard, you're fucked. I suggest you get some talent."

Probably safer to not do it. Being at least moderately social is a prerequisite for the job. You wouldn't list something as basic as "able to list the three financial statements" under technical skills, so don't list something comparable under interests. In fact, it would be more of a problem if you weren't interested in social events/socializing. If you have a particular type of social event in mind (I can't think of any, but you might), list that. On a resume, specificity is king.

EDIT: you're a crackup.

One of those lights, slightly brighter than the rest, will be my wingtip passing over.

So he's saying he'd put socializing with friends on his resume to show that he closes deals regularly? Am I just really tired or does that joke not make any sense.
