MBA Concentrations- Does it really matter?
If I am majoring in Finance for undergrad is it really necessary that I concentrate in Finance for my MBA. Banks really only care about the name of the school you go to so can I just concentrate in something I am interested in instead of concentrating in Finance.
but zala, was that really necessary?
Agreed. That was a bit harsh Zala (for the poster and for America's Growth Capital)
I think the original poster could get away with doing something else at b-school if he or she already has a finance major at undergrad, but you should probably question why you want to work in finance if you are interested in other things (or why do an MBA at all)...
You, too, are an idiot. You think people ENJOY studying 'management' for 2 years? It's a necessarily evil. Investment banking is a JOB. There are tons of people in banking who, given the chance to study anything they want for 2 years, would laugh at the idea of poring through finance textbooks. There is so much more interesting and challenging stuff that you can learn about while you're at school. Get off your fucking high horse about being "passionate" for pitchbook work.
Well, let's see:
Is that a question? I'd assume that if it were a question you'd use a question mark.
Oh okay, I guess it wasn't really a question. If you actually had a question for us, you wouldn't have answered it so confidently in your next sentence, since you apparently know what banks really only care about.
Also, how old do you think this person is? He said "I am majoring in Finance;" hence, he must still be in college. Why would he be asking this now? The average amount of pre-MBA work experience is what...FIVE YEARS? Who cares? It's such a pointless question. Maybe I should relax, though.
MBA Concentration Advice (Originally Posted: 07/10/2012)
Hello,
This is my first post on WSO. I'm a current MBA student at a Texas university. How valuable are MBA concentrations? I could get a concentration in Management and Leadership and graduate next May (2 years total). It's only an additional six hours. However, I've recently taken an interest in business statistics but it would push my graduation back until the Summer of 2013. Would it be worth the extra time? I know stats are important in Finance, but will it help me get a job?
On an unrelated note; would you list your MBA program gpa or your cumulative grad school gpa on a resume? I've taken a few classes that haven't counted which drops my cgpa to 3.5, when compared to my MBA gpa which is a 3.7. Thanks.
... non-grade disclosure is where it's at.
I was not at all concerned about my concentration, and neither were employers.
I don't think anyone cares about concentration and I wouldn't stay in school until the summer for one class. I don't think that will help either, business statistics or otherwise. In fact, it may hurt. I actually did a dual degree with my MBA and for a while there was a possibility that I had to stay for the summer to finish up my coursework. However, the offer I had with a BB started in July, which overlapped with the course. Everything ended up working out but you don't want to be stuck in school if you have a job opportunity.
I should clarify....it's fine if you do not have a concentration. It might not be fine if you are sitting in a finance interview and list "Marketing" as a concentration.
