mbb vs ib for growth equity

Curious what you all think about the pros/cons of doing mbb vs ib for growth equity/vc.

I have a product management background and also really enjoy thinking about consulting case studies and the strategic/qualitative sides of business.

While I understand that ibd is more useful for valuation, I generally find accounting very dry and boring and think that I wouldn't enjoy banking. Is it worth it to try to do banking just to get that valuation/"hard skill" exposure?

First off, many growth firms hire out of undergrad so that’s the easiest / most direct way in.

Second, while quantitative skills aren’t unimportant, valuation and financial modeling will be among the least important for growth. This isn’t buyout PE where your returns are highly sensitive depending on leverage levels and 50 other precise variables, so people are less price-sensitive and your models will generally just be looking at unit economics + sanity checking your assumptions. Consulting could get you enough experience there just fine
