Miss a few days of FT training due to graduation? Possible?

Although HR has yet been able to confirm the exact date of my FT NY training this summer, according to every other year I expect it to be around 14 July this year. However my graduation ceremony is on 17-18 July in London, do you think it's possible and polite to ask HR if I can skip the first few days to stay for my graduation? It wont make economic sense for me to fly to NY for 14-15-16 and fly back london on 17-18 and then fly back to NY again. It's very meaningful to me to be able to graduate with uni friends and family around, but I understand it's a big ask since I am skipping the first week! From my knowledge my training is 6 weeks in total. Am I missing much? And would HR raise their brows on such requests of a new hire?

Do you think I will miss a lot of great content? What do analysts do during the first week of FT training? One reason I am afraid they might not accommodate is because training is meant to be period that I will be paid. And disappearing for a week while still being paid salary doesnt seem to be reasonable... Not sure how I can ease this tbh.

Because they start on the 14th haha. And yes, I have a friend who went to school in the UK and graduation was after training. Just make sure to notify HR as soon as possible.

 

training is useless, but you still have to show up. plus it let's you bond with your classmates. i am still in touch with many ppl from my first yr analysts even though we're a few levels higher now. i imagine we may one day be md's and still bsing with each other.

Unless you told them about this boondoggle in advance of receiving an offer and were clear that it would make you miss some training, you really shouldn't go. At the end of the day, it may or may not hurt you to miss a few days of training--it's a gamble. And if you're willing to gamble away your job before you've even started it, then that better be the best goddamn vacation ever. I and plenty of people I know have cancelled vacations the day before we left, simply for work reasons...believe me, this won't be the first time you'll have to make this decision.

It's for a full-time position (not sure if that's worse). I would be going to China for 7 days (July 7-14) and my training starts the 12th. So, what should I do? Cancel or get off to a bad start?

 

first day is just getting your HR shit together, so if you can get that done ahead of time/later, then you really are only missing 1-2 days.

7 days all expense paid trip to china is pretty sweet, i'd def ask about joining a bit late.

There's a myriad of bullet-proof stories you can cook up to get out of 2 relatively inconsequential days. Just play your cards wisely, and you'll be home free.

I definitely think it would be worse if this was for an internship.

Given that intern training only lasts 5 days (compared to a month for full-time), missing 2 of those days would be very bad.

Also, as an intern, you are still trying to get a full-time offer, so it could hurt you a LOT more than a full-time analyst if you ask for vacation.

 

They will not be very impressed to say the least, just drop the trip. One chick from HR even told me I couldnt attend my own graduation and it would be looked unfavourably if I skipped the day (1st day of training admittedly). However they got back to me and said that was complete rubish later on.
