Miss a few days of FT training due to graduation? Possible?
Although HR has yet been able to confirm the exact date of my FT NY training this summer, according to every other year I expect it to be around 14 July this year. However my graduation ceremony is on 17-18 July in London, do you think it's possible and polite to ask HR if I can skip the first few days to stay for my graduation? It wont make economic sense for me to fly to NY for 14-15-16 and fly back london on 17-18 and then fly back to NY again. It's very meaningful to me to be able to graduate with uni friends and family around, but I understand it's a big ask since I am skipping the first week! From my knowledge my training is 6 weeks in total. Am I missing much? And would HR raise their brows on such requests of a new hire?
Thank you in advance for your advice and opinions!
Yeah, I think they'll be reasonable about this.
Just be prepared for them to say no. (they might, who knows)
Just be upfront about it now and let them know it's meaningful to you. Seems like a standard request they should be able to accomodate.
It doesn't seem like something that would be overly difficult to accommodate and it never hurts to ask.
Do you think I will miss a lot of great content? What do analysts do during the first week of FT training? One reason I am afraid they might not accommodate is because training is meant to be period that I will be paid. And disappearing for a week while still being paid salary doesnt seem to be reasonable... Not sure how I can ease this tbh.
Is this for GS? You should be okay then
OMG how do you know :D Yes it's for GS. May be you have had similar experiences? Would appreciate any input on this.
Because they start on the 14th haha. And yes, I have a friend who went to school in the UK and graduation was after training. Just make sure to notify HR as soon as possible.
Missing 1 Day of Training (Originally Posted: 03/30/2007)
I've got an IBD internship this summer that starts a couple of days before my sister's high school graduation. Do you think I'd be able to get 1 day off during training to go back home for it?
ask your HR contact
yea def
Missing a couple days of training (Originally Posted: 03/23/2007)
Hi all--how bad would it be if I missed a couple days of training bc/ of a summer trip. The trip is all expenses paid--and lasts a set amount of days (so I can't really leave early).
Thanks, 37
It'll probably be pretty bad, not showing up for training? Especially if it is a non-essential trip (funeral, wedding where you are the bride/groom, etc)
haha, you want to skip training for a vacation
training is useless, but you still have to show up. plus it let's you bond with your classmates. i am still in touch with many ppl from my first yr analysts even though we're a few levels higher now. i imagine we may one day be md's and still bsing with each other.
where is your all expenses trip to?
Most companies wont look upon this in a good way. You are wasting their time and money.
Also could be considered as poor dedication etc.
Plus, training is also probably the first time the staffers and more senior people meet the SAs, and I would think first impressions would count for something. Probably be bad for you if you aren't there to make a good impression or even worse, get called out for not being there.
Is this for your full-time job or a summer analyst position?
In this business, Training vs Vacation = Training wins
Unless you told them about this boondoggle in advance of receiving an offer and were clear that it would make you miss some training, you really shouldn't go. At the end of the day, it may or may not hurt you to miss a few days of training--it's a gamble. And if you're willing to gamble away your job before you've even started it, then that better be the best goddamn vacation ever. I and plenty of people I know have cancelled vacations the day before we left, simply for work reasons...believe me, this won't be the first time you'll have to make this decision.
It's for a full-time position (not sure if that's worse). I would be going to China for 7 days (July 7-14) and my training starts the 12th. So, what should I do? Cancel or get off to a bad start?
That's actually not an awful situation. Ask to join three days late. They may be okay with this.
first day is just getting your HR shit together, so if you can get that done ahead of time/later, then you really are only missing 1-2 days.
7 days all expense paid trip to china is pretty sweet, i'd def ask about joining a bit late.
Ask the HR guru, but be penitent. Seriously, I hope he/she says yes. That's really a cool trip. Let us know what they say.
I think it would be a lot worse if it was for an internship. I doubt if it would be a problem, but I would clear it with HR and your supervisor first.
You think they care more about a 2 month SA, many of whom won't return, misssing training than a 2/3 year full time employee? Check yo' self fool.
There's a myriad of bullet-proof stories you can cook up to get out of 2 relatively inconsequential days. Just play your cards wisely, and you'll be home free.
Given that intern training only lasts 5 days (compared to a month for full-time), missing 2 of those days would be very bad.
Also, as an intern, you are still trying to get a full-time offer, so it could hurt you a LOT more than a full-time analyst if you ask for vacation.
They will not be very impressed to say the least, just drop the trip. One chick from HR even told me I couldnt attend my own graduation and it would be looked unfavourably if I skipped the day (1st day of training admittedly). However they got back to me and said that was complete rubish later on.
I guess it would be different for full-time vs SA. Def would have been bad for SA.
trip=cancelled. I guess there's always retirement. sigh
you can go to china another time, don't sweat it

Several months ago I booked a trip down to Florida, because I am the best man at my friends wedding. I was planning on leaving Thurs night and returning on Tuesday. I recently found out that I'll be starting training in early July. Has anyone missed training due to a prior obligation? If so how was it received by HR? If I have to I have no problem cutting down the length of the trip...
That sounds like a terrible idea. Training hours are generally better than regular hours, so you should be able to fly out at a decent hour Friday night. Don't try to miss one of your first few days.
