I was checking linkedin profiles from random IB analysts @ MS in LDN, and got even more confused:

there is a guy working in the M&A (Oil & Gas Team) and there is also a guy in the Oil & Gas Sector Coverage

Now, are those 2 different groups? Does Oil & Gas Sector Coverage do any M&A or..?

I was always under the impression that MS did have a standalone M&A product group in London, but I could be wrong. I do know people that work within industry teams who do their own M&A who list their groups as Industry Coverage/Investment Banking, and others that use Industry M&A, despite these being the exact same teams.

Also, it's common to see geography-based groups with "M&A" or "Coverage" tagged on, sometimes mixed within the same bank, so you get UK M&A, but Nordic Coverage too.

Don't know about best groups though.

Thanks for your comment!

Best groups, as I was told on one of the MS events which I participated, during the informal conversation with one associate who recently joined from HLHZ Restrucutring: (roughly in this order, not 100% sure)

1) FIG, TMT 2) Transportation 3) Utilities 4) Oil & Gas

but pretty much all the groups should be well regarded, i think that she just mentioned o&g and utilities as an example

Yes, first round at the IBD.

Bach, thanks. Do you know something about the different teams, or some general info about the division?

Within the division, M&A and restructuring are the ones that interest me the most.

Well, all my interviewers came from the M&A Group, and also my personal connections are in that Group, therefore I have very limited knowledge of the cultural differences among the IBD Groups. Good luck!
