Ms Finrisk at Bocconi vs universities in Germany
Hello. I am currently finishing my degree in engineering in Athens, Greece. I would like to apply for a Master's degree in Quantitative Finance.
I am thinking about Bocconi but also since I speak fluent German I am also thinking about the University of Frankfurt or the Technical University of Munich.
I would like your help in two matters:
1. How well connected is Bocconi on securing a Quant position in London or Switzerland? I have read some great stuff for the Msc in Finance but what about the Ms in Finrisk??
2. I know that German Universities might not have a worldwide reputation, especially in Finance, but since I am thinking of working in Germany what would you rather think is more important : getting a degree in a more respectful university with connections to many markets or graduating from a university well connected in the German market?
If you want to work in Switzerland, you should consider HSG quantitative economics and finance master. The requirements would be pretty much the same as Bocconi's and it will place you probably better in the German market and cost you less. You should also take a look at the ETH UZH master in Quant Finance. In my opinion, a degree from the country where you want to work beats all equivalents and even better MSc because of the links between the university and local companies. So it really depends where you want to live/work. Bocconi may be better suited if you want to go to London. Regarding Frankfurt and Munich I have no information.
You should check out TU Munich's Msc in Finance and Information Management. Has supposedly strong placement in quant finance, not sure about London though
I thought that the quant program at TU Munich was the Master's in Mathematical Finance and Actuarial Science. But I will also check that out. Thanks!

HSG accepts only students who have graduated from finance. Otherwise you must attent a preparatory year in order to be finally accepted. And to be honest I am not willing to waste nearly 3 years for a Masters degree!
Now, about Bocconi, I read some comments on this forum saying that Bocconi gets you to London only if you are Italian. So is the university really worth it for international students (EU-citizens)??
Not necessarily true :) I'm a first-year MSc. Finance student at Bocconi and I have a summer IB internship lined up for London - and I'm not even European! There are a good amount of people who have gotten summer internship offers from all over the place (just off the top of my head, I know North Americans, Russians, and various eastern Europeans ).
Likewise, I know some internationals that haven't, as well as some Italians who haven't gotten any offers (some even only had 1 or 2 requests for interviews, tops). Of course, since the majority of students at the school are Italian, sometimes it seems like the Italians are unfairly favored by the banks. In truth, many banks who are hiring from Bocconi, are looking for people to fill their Italian desks, and many of the teams doing the interviews are Bocconi alumni. At the same time, many of the hiring teams are looking for the best person to fit the job, regardless of where they're from.
My only warning - and this goes doubly so for MAFINRISK, which I've heard is more quantitative than the MSc. Finance - be prepared to study, study, and study.
