National Defense Authorization Act
Thought this was pretty important today.....The NDAA was passed in the house, essentially restricting the right of a speedy and fair trial to any citizen who is suspected of being a "terrorist"(basically whatever they want it to be). The US is now able to be labeled a "battleground" and anyone can be arrested at any time without cause. Really odd don't you think that the mainstream media hasn't even mentioned this ONCE?! I hope people start to wake up and realize that their rights are being severely infringed upon and that the USA is becoming more and more of a totalitarian government. Shit like this in history has never turned out well.....Here is a recent link from Zerohedge, however there is a bunch of other resources that explain this act(if you wanna call it that). Just google it, and prepare to vomit. More reason to support Ron Paul.
The problem is that there is no possible way for a revolution to happen in non 3rd world countries due to technology.
I wonder how long military forces would attack/arrest the people before they realize they're destroying themselves.
This will get tried and tested in the courts.
I am against infringing upon the rights ot US citizens. That being said, if you are an enemy combatant, US citizen or not, haven't you already made the choice to actively fight the US military? I don't understand why being a US citizen in Al Qaida should give you any special privileges over your brothers in arms. Warfare has changed from battlelines, fronts and trenches to obscurity and fog of war. Our system of laws is behind the times when it comes to addressing the current and future threats to the US.
Maybe the definition of terrorist should be more narrowly defined, however, I believe that the US military is best equipped to deal with the country's enemies, citizen or not.
great...and you prefer to live your life in fear so much so that you would give up your rights? To the point that you destroy the constitution that the country you are "protecting" is founded on?
revolutions can happen anywhere where enough people hate the king. the ambitious men who would like to replace the king are then emboldened to make their move when they have reason to believe that the people will support them. this is entirely independent of the level of technology in society. revolution is a human process in its entirety.
I was fuming about this for a week now. I'm glad you wrote a post about it. The founders would be ashamed of us. John Stewart took a pretty good crack at it:
Who the fuck is living in fear? Why would anyone who has nothing illegal to hide live in fear? If you're innocent and/or don't associate yourself with suspicious/guilty parties, then you have nothing to worry about.
I would much rather take all the dollars that go into useless and bloated government programs and regulations into the defense sector or into anything that protects the country and its people.
Like I said, the ones who are afraid are the ones who have something to hide. Anything that stops or slows down sinister individuals from acting out any of their hidden agendas is fucking great in my book. It's like preventive medicine.
ding ding ding! we have a winner!!.................I knew there would be some jackass to say " ohhh if you have nothing to hide then what do yo uhave to worry aboooouttt?" this is NOT the question here.....this is a matter of rights as a citizen. NOTHING ELSE. Ok today congress couldnt come to an agreement on funding the govt until the new year? BUT THEY HAVE NO PROBLEM PASSING A BILL SPENDING 662 TRILLION ON A POLICE STATE, RIGHT?! WAKE THE FUCK UP! you sound so naive......
662 billion*
"He who sacrifices freedom for security, deserves neither" -Benjamin Franklin
Police work is only easy in a police state.
The only thing is, during his time, Ben Franklin didn't have crowded public transportation systems, airplanes with 300+ people aboard, tall skyscrapers, nuclear weapons, and suicidal religious fanatics.
So I don't care what he said to be honest. I don't care what anyone said that far back. Times change and you will have to sacrifice some of your freedoms for a marginal increase in your safety.
Ok, I admit the quote is a little blunt. I understand your point but respectively disagree. The argument that the fundamental rights established by the Constitution should be eroded because of the passage of time is a defense commonly used. It is the most common reason the second amendment comes under fire.
Saying that you have to sacrifice some of your freedoms for a marginal increase in safety is painting with way too broad of a brush. Sure, I make concessions at the airport - to me that's acceptable. The NDAA repeals due process for Americans on American soil. If that doesn't indicate the movement to a police state - I'm not sure anything will.
People were also freaking out over the Patriot Act saying the same things. Yeah we felt some direct impact to our personal lives with tighter security measures, maybe higher taxes, and maybe sacrificing some of our privacy in certain cases (probably without even knowing it)...but beyond that how else did that act fuck up our day-to-day lives and freedoms? I am actually asking because I don't know. I'm not big on these defense politics, but it just seems like it wasn't that big of a deal for the amount of panic and drama it brought initially.
i see this shit and it just boils my blood.....how these cocksucking scum politicians get reelected. They pretty much just declared war on the citizens of the united states, taking away basic rights. ehh constitution? fuck it, we dont need it, it was 200 years ago anyways......UHH HELLO?!?!?! that was the whole fucking point of the constitution, to establish freedoms and declare a nation with a government. So if there if the constitution doesnt matter, then there must be no government. Who the fuck is paying for this? of course the taxpayers. What a great scheme......
honestly, you can say at any point in time that the current state of weaponry is too dangerous for us to keep our freedom. the invention of the crossbow? i mean, come on, all it takes is for one deranged peasant to get a couple of bolts and he could kill a dozen men! the flintlock? scores, maybe. how about grapeshot? a determined group of rowdies can kill or maim 100 men.
if we expect our military to run a global empire, the least we civilians can do is not be such pussies and afraid to take a bullet. these guys are getting pay 10K a year to get shot at and to dodge IEDs while we cannot bear even a .00001% chance of being done in by a terrorist? come on, that is fucking weak. you seriously are 9x more likely to be killed by a COP than by a terrorist for fuck's sake.
we can support the troops by not tearing out a piece of the constitution everytime some soccer mom shits her pants. we live in a dangerous world. it's time we as a country sacced the fuck up, or quit playing the empire game. splitting the difference as we are doing now makes us both bullies AND cowards simultaneously, which is an amazing feat.
Incremental steps towards total government control.
Anyone defending this is a fucking clown who needs to eat a fat dick. I've got a better idea, let law enforcement do their jobs and keep us safe. Why on Earth would ANYONE think this is ok? Think about how malleable this is...how easily the government could bend this to imprison someone for questionable reasons. What happened to due process?
What a fucking sham.
I'm sure all those dudes that have ended up on Deathrow despite being innocent thought 'I didn't do anything wrong, I have nothing to worry about' right up until they did.
