Need help with exploding offer! MBB vs MBB

Hi! I'll be brief and please feel free to redirect me to the appropriate place if this is the wrong place.

I have an offer at Firm #1. I have a final-round interview with Firm #2 on Friday. Firm #1 wants an answer BEFORE Friday, conveniently. Firm #1 does not know I'm applying to Firm #2. If I get Firm #2, I would likely take that offer (location). Both are MBB.

The way I see it, below are my options. Please advise, any help at ALL is appreciated.

  1. Take Firm #1 offer and withdraw from Firm #2.

  2. Withdraw from Firm #1 and hope Firm #2 works out.

  3. Take Firm #1, renege if Firm #2 works out.

  4. Renege both and just frolic in meadows forever????

  5. other options??

Congratulations on the offers!

I'm sure you can ask for an extension of a week of you'd like. If they ask for details you can just say you're excited about their firm but just want to see through your recruiting process before making any decisions. It's not an issue, they deal with this all the time. I had offers from multiple MBB as well and none did anything to pressure me into accepting an offer before I was ready. They want you to come in excited.

Agree with the above comment, I would reach out to your recruiting team at Firm #1 ASAP and ask for an extension. From experience at my firm, we would never punish a recruit for asking for this, the worst case is saying no. Hopefully you didn’t lie and tell them you weren’t considering or interviewing with anyone else, could be a tough look if so.

IF firm 1 won’t let you extend, then I would highly encourage you to take the offer, ESPECIALLY if this is just a location issue. It’s not that hard to change locations with MBBs after 1-2 years. Do NOT just risk your offer on a final round. Not worth it at all IMO.

Ask for an extension. By the way, if you have an offer from one MBB they assume that you applied and have interviews with all three. Cross-offers are very common since they look for very similar things in candidates. If they ask in the final round if you have an exploding offer, tell the truth. During one final round after I had received an offer from another MBB, the partner asked me where else I had offers from and he spent a solid few minutes hearing my reservations about both firms.

Echo asking for a extension, but also ask the other firm if they'd be able to accelerate their final round interview for you -- like some other posters have mentioned, all 3 MBB firms understand and expect you to be interviewing as a competitive candidate for the other ones and have a track record of accommodating candidates that do. All else fails, take the offer you have.
