Did I miss something today?

What is driving this?

You're born, you take shit. You get out in the world, you take more shit. You climb a little higher, you take less shit. Till one day you're up in the rarefied atmosphere and you've forgotten what shit even looks like. Welcome to the layer cake, son.

Fear.

NetFlix has a lot of haters. The media loves to write "NetFlix is doomed" stories because it sells ads. This reinforces the idea that is it doomed.

Is it really doomed? I don't know. It might be a good time to pick up NFLX if you are bullish though.

I didn't know if the CEO was making more stupid moves again.

I am a Netflix subscriber and have been for about 6 months. I can use it on my ps3 and my phone. The IDEA of netflix is great. The people running this company are idiots. I am probably going to cancel because of the titles available on the service. If you search WallStreet, neither of the movies show up. The movie heat doesn't show up, etc.

They are too far behind on good titles and offer too many bad titles to make the content of their service worth it. Ya, it is only 8 dollars a month, but is it really worth 8 dollars a month to sit and hope they get the rights to a movie/show/documentary you are interested in?

They really need to step it up if they want to be a viable alternative to torrents. I can remotely download this content for free, from my phone to my computer and watch it wherever I want.

I agree, management has made some mistakes recently.

Every major decision NetFlix made over the last ten years, except the decision to split the businesses and raise prices, was made after extensive testing in focus groups. NetFlix brought in focus groups for everything, including to give feedback on the color of the envelope.

Then, it decided to hike prices, split the businesses, etc, without any input from customers. As you can see, 800,000 subscribers left because they were pissed at this decision.

Aside from this slip up, NetFlix has a very strong long-term vision: to provide content you like, anywhere, anytime. Streaming is obviously the future of content, and I don't think people will continue to use DVD players in a couple of years when everything will be streamable.

@gurg

I disagree. Most of the studios see NetFlix and DishTV/Blockbuster as new distribution channels, not a competitive threat.

Their movie selection is better than you are giving it credit for, particularly if you're willing to find older movies to watch.

What sets it apart, in my eyes, is the vast array of TV shows (many in their entirety) available for streaming. They've got some amazing stuff on there that's worth checking out.

Also, $8 a month is nothing. People expect way too much shit for no cost at this point and go into an uproar when they actually have to pay...as though this shit just pops into existence with no cost. It's absurd.

I think you are missing my point though: All of this stuff is available for free. Albeit, illegally, it is still available for free.

Has anyone noticed that blockbuster has taken the opportunity during netflix's plunders to revamp their service? http://www.blockbuster.com/

They'll never be a 'viable alternative to torrents' because they will never have new movies/shows/whatever for free. What makes them competitive is their easy of use for the common person and the fact that its 'legal' since some people care about downloading illegal content or whatever.

Overblown. First by the bulls. Now by the bears. Like King said, if you like older movies they are beyond solid. Know it's a shock for many of you guys, but there are tens of millions of people out there who won't watch anything made post 1975. Torrents are useless for that audience, for the most part.

Depends where you look for the torrents. You aren't going to find the original Oceans 11 on thepiratebay.org

That being said, I was pretty pissed when Netflix didn't have Heat.

It's not even just old ass movies, I'm talking shit like Escape from New York, Robocop, Three Days of the Condor (which everyone should check out.) Plenty of awesome shit on there.

Also, Torrents aren't quite as easy or as instant as people make them out to be, they still require planning and safeguards. Whereas Netflix is instant. It's paying for convenience and a pretty good selection.

Alas, people feel entitled to watch Transformers 3 for free, instantly, as soon as it's out of theaters.

I never saw Transformers 3. I hate Shia LeBouf and he has ruined so many movies that could have been amazing.

Anyway, I get why Netflix is amazing for the typical consumer that doesn't know how to operate torrents properly.

The movie studios saw Netflix as a major threat to many of their lines of distribution and didn't like the idea of streaming movies through Netflix. The word unlimited doesn't sit well with studios. With DVD mail in there is a limit based on the mail service, but with streaming it really does start approaching unlimited. The studios wanted to end or at least limit Netflix so they didn't allow access to their newest movies. Netflix was powerless to stop this. They will never have the newest movies on streaming b/c the studios just won't allow it.

To battle it Netflix signed some high priced deals to at least offer their customers something but eventually those costs got too high and had to be passed on.

For people satisfied with older movies and watching TV shows, Netflix instant is a great deal. For people who want access to the latest new releases (or even blockbusters of the last 5 years), it just isn't the answer. Don't pay for Netflix streaming hoping that they will soon start releasing the blockbusters you want.

It's all about content here. The price could be 20 bucks a month if they offered streaming content that wasn't garbage or post 2000. Streaming is indeed the future of content but I am sure the movie industry is going to bitch and moan all the way there. This is just like the transition the music industry went through years back with iTunes and all of that. The transition is inevitable in light of increasing availability of high speed internet etc etc. If Netflix is the first to get their foot in the door then they are a value buy, but that's a pretty long term perspective. Realistically, they will probably get crushed by giants like Google in the race to secure content. That is really up for grabs though. I am not shocked in the least this happened.

I like the original Terminators and all the golden oldies of the 90's, but these days with the extraordinary leaps that CGI has made....I don't want watch anything that doesn't look like Avatar these days. Just like playing Contra is cool for a while, but after a little bit I want to go back to raping people in Call of Duty. New high score! What does that mean?
