New CoStar Verification
So apparently CoStar now requires you to have their phone app, and when you log in through the website you need to:
1), Verify that it is you by taking a picture of yourself in the CoStar app.
2). Scan the QR code on the computer with your phone
3). Re-verify that it is actually you with a face scan to make sure it matches your picture.
4). Finally can use CoStar's service.
This is extremely annoying to have to do this every time I log in. Hopefully they get some push back on this...
Update: Got an email from CoStar regarding this change. Gave some bs reason such as data protection, and security features. What they probably meant was "we don't like people sharing accounts and we want to collect more data".
I just logged in and didn't have to do any of this...?
Maybe they are slowly rolling this out? Two of my team members have had to do this but the other two have not.
Also logged in this morning and did not have to do this. Just the normal SMS verification.
Mine only makes me do the text verification which I find annoying enough
Costar seems to be slowly rolling this out. For people that have licenses for quite some time (4+ years) it's standard log in where you just have to click "I accept" when logging in. Then Costar integrated a text verification function, about a year or two ago - I only saw people having to log in with this function if you recently received a new costar license (my analyst had to do this and I tried to get the old way for him, costar said no dice).
This photo verification thing thing though... News to me. that's bullshit IMO.
Fake News
The real question is are they going to steal and watermark/copyright the photos they are collecting from people?
If this is facts, I'm going to get ahead of the ball and send them some of my DNA and a fingerprint. Hopefully this verifies me for life.
This real life? I know a lot of ppl are pretty annoyed with 2 factor thru sms...
Such a pain in the A, I tried to tell them I don't want to pay for their SMS and they said I could do an app thing, maybe thats what OP is refering to.
I’m at one of the big firms and we are not fans of this. I’m sure our people are going to fight them and get a way around this in our contracts, but it is certainly annoying.
This just started at our (middle market) firm. We are considering just ditching Costar and switching fully over to Crexi. Has anyone else here started using Crexi?
Have started having to do this. Incredibly annoying. The most annoying part of it is that they claim is it for security reasons, which is total BS. I have multiple bank/credit card accounts that do not go to this extent to secure log ins. It is totally about people using one account on multiple comps/locations. Maybe this is a stupid way to look at it, but I would be much less aggravated if they would just come out and say that, and not act like they are doing this for the greater good of their clients. This move is all about the investors. I called them and asked what would happen if I tried to log on without my phone available and they said I would just be SOL.
This started after the Xceligent lawsuit: https://www.wsj.com/articles/despite-xceligents-bankruptcy-costar-plans…. Agreed, extremely annoying.
We are looking into Yardi Matrix as a replacement. They apparently have a legacy multifamily research product from a company they acquired and are trying to rapidly build out their office research. They have a 400+ person team dedicated to collecting the data and its a fraction of the cost of costar. Anyone else using it?
I got a license in April of this year and only have to do the text verification. I can't imagine the picture verification is going over well. Hopefully it doesn't last long as I'm sure they're losing customers.
Apparently CoStar is suing customers for account sharing now too.
