About to intern at a BB for the summer in NYC. Was wondering what nightlife is like and if most things are for 21+. Thank you!

NYU bars are probably the best bet if you're not 21+, otherwise your fake is probably good as gone if you try anywhere good

5/25/17

SB'd. Try East Village/Greenwich Village/Ukrainian Village area. You can definitely find some fun bars that aren't strictly 21+.

6/5/17

Disagree. The NYU bars are notoriously aggressive as they know they're dealing with some underage interns. I would recommend you go out further to 3rd ave. Think Kips Bay/NoMad area.

5/25/17

agree with the above, I've seen plenty of fakes swiped off of people the past few summers.. if you're celebrating and spend a good amount of money on a table they'll look past it.. but definitely don't want that to be a common occurrence, or else you'll starve lmao

5/25/17

I'd give NYC a 7/10 ....at BEST.

I'd consider the mid-market cities if you're looking to black the F out and wake up with god knows who in your twin bed.

-Tampa
-Jacksonville
-Forth Worth
-Syracuse
-Evanston
-Des Moines

EDIT: Jk lol NYC is #1

I would also add Little Rock, Bismarck & Edina to this list.

Where do Vegas, LA, Chi-town, Huston, Denver fall on this list. I am really interested in having both Top Tier Banking / Bottles & Models experience on my resume.

6/3/17

Vegas
NYC
LA
Houston
Denver

Chi-town, ????

NYC and LA is top tier bottles and models. Vegas is like at a smaller elite shop.

Denver is good but the lack of women brings it down.

5/25/17

Yeah, I've definitely heard the stories about how the bouncers in New York City are notoriously good at spotting a fake. If you have friends from the city, they probably know a couple decent places that are solid for people with fakes.

5/26/17

Is The Box still a thing? what about Marquis?

5/26/17

Marquee? Yes, it's a fun little spot still. It's not as hot as it once was, but it's still a good time.

5/27/17

Yes but unless you go with "promoters" it's ridiculously expensive and the crowd you surround yourself with is just.. yeah.. Also hope you're into that sort of stuff (The Box). Still is a thing. Marquis is ok.

5/30/17

I have a question, does anyone actually know how the promotion business works? Like, do those kids make money? and if those kids do then why are they getting paid? Since you don't pay someone unless they are making you more money, but if you give half the tables away for free how are they breaking even on the expensive rent/staff/amount of operating hours in a month? I would be so interested in SBE and their contractor's financials.

But Marquee must be doing something right Blackstone put them in their hotel in Vegas.

6/5/17

Promoters get paid usually $10 per person they bring to a club with a minimum of 10-12 people. They have flexibility on what nights they work. Girls with promoters have their cover comped and guys still have to pay the normal cover, but the advantage for the guy going with a promoter is that they can cut the line and are guaranteed to get in. Promoters also get a small percentage of the revenues of bottle service ordered by their group (usually). Clubs hire promoting agencies not to "give tables away for free" but to bring attractive girls to clubs on nights when the club knows they're going to have low turnout due to an unknown DJ playing or competition from festivals (i.e. Gov Ball).

6/5/17

There's an HBS case study on Marquee that you should read if interested. The PDF is easily google-able for free

My days of fake I.D.'s are LONG gone. But I've been drinking in NYC with a fake one since I was 16. I remember having various from awful to looks like I have a Jason Bourne level Swiss lockbox.

Tier 3 I.D.'s are from out of state. NJ used to be easy to forge but they recently redid their whole ID system, same with Pennsylvania. By recent I think I mean 10-years ago.

Tier 2. There used to be a time when you could "chalk" your NYS drivers license using red and white colored pencil.

Tier 1. Somone over 21's I.D. This is the best one. I had this from a buddy of mine(5 years older) and it worked everywhere. Scan it, no problem! Doesn't look like me, I gained weight, grew my hair/cut my hair. For bonus points apply for a credit card with this person's name on it, just don't activate it.

That said I'm 100% sure there are still bars that let high school kids in so there must be so many more that let college kids in. West village by NYU seems like a sure bet, so does LES. UES probably is easy too.

5/26/17

There are very few bars on the UES that actually check ID, would agree there. Irish bars are especially lax.

Cheer up, Bateman. What's the matter? No shiatsu this morning?

5/26/17

Glad to hear it's still true.

Good 'ol Ireland. Where if you are tall enough to see over the bar you can order a Guinness. Also while I'm talking about Ireland can everyone stop ordering Jameson and switch to Tullamore Dew.

5/26/17

Do I know you? I exclusively drink Tullamore. Jameson is horse shit.

Cheer up, Bateman. What's the matter? No shiatsu this morning?

5/26/17

I wish I could say yes, but we just happen to have the same impeccable taste in Irish Whiskey.

5/26/17

The Nightlife is NF. The ratio of golf tees to Toms is stupid beat.

5/26/17

Just dance in the street. Trust me.

It's BYOB but less cover charge

5/27/17

If under 21, you will get your ID taken at any reputable place. I recently went with a group of my friends (all 23+) and one friends sister with a legitimate NY id who looked like her, still busted immediately.

In terms of bars - turtle bay if you like being around drunk college crowded kids your age. You'll hear a lot about the stress and difficult work 'their MDs are giving them'. You will be with exclusively under 21 people though - and maybe some poor creeps looking to score a girl half their age with daddy issues. That dynamic really turns the bar into a 5/5 establishment. Note this is only for Wednesday or Thursday. I forget which is their crowded dollar beer night.

"I'm not fat. I'm cultivating mass."

5/27/17

All in all, it depends on where you go. As someone who's been in NYC on each side of the spectrum, a lot of it is just figuring out what place seems to be strict and what isn't. Many ID, many don't, many just take a look while others swipe/scan.

Night life in NYC is fun, especially if you have some money to drop - go out with some friends, dress decent, and you'll be alright. Many, many bars don't bother IDing (St. Markets, Village, etc) but most will just take a glance. I hope you've invested in a fake (if that's what you want to do) or have someone else's ID that looks very much like you. Occasionally they scan, so if you go for the fake ID route, do your research (reddit, fakeid, etc) on what you'd like to purchase/do to get that.

You'll have fun - NYC is the place to be. Lots of fun bars clubs and lounges, Google/Yelp is your friend, as well as word of mouth. Some bouncers take and try to sell it back for $, others might give it back for free, some simply don't do it at all. Learn how to sweet talk and be confident.

Brass Monkey in West Village, has multiple floors/bars + a dope rooftop area.

6/2/17

+1 on Brass Monkey, but it's definitely about as dead-center Meatpacking District as you can get, not West Village

6/2/17

Yeah you're right, meant Meatpacking not West Village! Good catch. The Standard Biergarten right down the street can be fun too, but it gets packed every night.

6/4/17

big fan of The Standard Biergarten. If it's nice out i like to start there and then move over to brass monkey

6/4/17

Love brass monkey but they are strict on fakes. I can't comment on the Beirgarten since I've only gone there after I turned 21

6/5/17

Ehh you can do better than Brass Monkey. From a couple years ago but still relevant:

"Type of douche: The "I'm on the list" douche (who's not on the list)

Meatpacking rejects, the guys who are were denied entrance into one of the area's more upscale clubs like Le Bain or 1Oak, end up at Brass Monkey, which explains the high concentration of douche. Take a bruised-ego bro who still has some unfinished creepin' to do and put him in a bar with dozens of others just like him. Have them compete over a limited number of women."

Per my restaurant post, Beauty & Essex is also a bar and it is an insane venue. If you want bourbon, good cocktails, and a sick speakeasy, go to Dear Irving. If you want a parking garage converted into a gay club, go to Industry Bar.

Hello Idaho how are you? Is Vander bar in midtown Manhattan worth checking out? Thanks

3/25/18

The first time I went was a Saturday night in the winter and it was absolutely stacked both inside AND upstairs. For the rooftop, they give out red robes for people to wear, pretty interesting. I was there a couple of nights ago (Wednesday) to grab drinks with some friends from out of town and it was pretty crowded up top (summertime, of course) but inside was pretty empty. Hard to beat the direct-center-view of the Empire State Building.

3/25/18

Nice! I'll def check out again.

It ain't what you know, it's who you know

3/25/18

I'm much more ingratiated with the hip(ster) scene in the city, so my picks will reflect that. For a nice outdoor area with a taco truck in the back, Union Pool in Williamsburg is great. Also, if you have any semblance of game you're pretty much guaranteed to get laid.

House of Yes is a good one too, depending on the night you go. Try to find a time when Lucas Walters is dj'ing, imo. Regardless, it's a pretty decently sized space, with two separate rooms, each with their own DJs, and an outdoor smoking area/bar/secret hot tub.

Finally, Freehold is my final pick. Nice facilities, big outdoor area in addition to a decent dance area, plus they have skee ball. Good mix of white girls as well as classy black and spanish girls too, which are slightly lacking in my previous mentions. Again, I'm biased but try to look for a night Lucas Walters is playing. Again, most of these spots will cater to a more bohemian crowd-- not uber hipster, but definitely not what you'd find in the Meatpacking District.

3/25/18

my brother lives in brooklyn and he took me to Union Pool a few years ago, hipster-heavy but was a cool spot

I'd say Marquee, Bungalow 8 and Pasha for nightclubs.

For restaurants definitely PerSe, Alain Ducaise, Masa, Tao, Buddha Bar, Nobu etc...

That should help you out.

3/25/18
JambaMan:

I'd say Marquee, Bungalow 8 and Pasha for nightclubs. For restaurants definitely PerSe, Alain Ducaise, Masa, Tao, Buddha Bar, Nobu etc... That should help you out.

Personally, I don't think any of those clubs are particularly exclusive, though maybe I've lived and grown with some of these places having spent most of my life in NYC. Marquee in particular is a real "bankers hangout" these days and frankly I think the scene is played out.

Per Se is terrific, as are Chanterelle, Nobu, Le Bernardin, and Bouley (hopefully you guys don't have significant others that ask to go to these places all the time). I never went to Alain Ducasse, which actually closed earlier in 2007. He'll be opening up a couple new restaurants in NYC this year though.

3/25/18

I don't really consider Pasha exclusive, but thats just me

3/25/18

I would agree that Pasha is definitely a bit easier to get into than some of the other places mentioned.

If you are in the Hamptons definitely try Pink Elephant.

3/25/18

Marquee and Pink Elephant are not exclusive. Since I can get in as a poor, underaged, moderately looking male individual, I don't think it can even come close to being exclusive.

3/25/18

3/25/18

Tenjune and Cain are both tough to get into. Downtown Cipriani's upstairs is tough also. Mind you, if you are reasonably good looking and have some social savvy, you should be able to build up a social circle of at least 5-6 very attractive girls. With this in mind, there are no exclusive venues, you'll get in anywhere with a 5-1 girl to guy ratio.

3/25/18

Bungalow 8 is the only club I was ever turned away from....and only one time. The other times I went , I got in with sneakers.

Tenjune is NOT hard to get in, esp with Alex at the door. He's such a nice guy.

Cain is hard since it has that bitchy girl out front. The blonde.

********"Babies don't cost money, they MAKE money." - Jerri Blank********

3/25/18

I don't know if I would call any of these places "exclusive" or "tough to get into" now that I think about it. As long as you have some money ($100) to give the doorman and you bring 4 attractive girls that you know, and you don't dress like a moron (in shorts or something) and wear what is expected to be worn at a nightclub such as nice dress shoes, a nice button down shirt with maybe a jacke,t and some decent jeans or pants you will get in anywhere.

Clubs want to bring in as many people as possible. This whole "exclusivity" talk goes out the window if you do the above mentioned things.

Tao and Nobu are not exclusive. Yes, it maybe tough to get a reservation less than 2 weeks in advance, but if you call enough in advance you will get a reservation.

Having been to Per Se I know the waiting time is usually 2 months for a table. However, if you have gone there before and spent a good amount (remember that this is Per Se we are talking about) if you call to get a table again, you will be moved towards the top of the waiting list and can get a table in as little as one to two weeks.

3/25/18

Per Se's food is not very good. I've had better and it's not worth the hype. Maybe it was better 2 years ago. As for the clubs, as fun as they are, they're really not that exclusive. I've seen longer lines at the clubs in Las Vegas (average wait at PUre is 4 hours without a table for a good night). That being said, follow instructions above and you'll be fine.

Clubs are so overrated in this town, so unless you are going with a good group of friends, want to people watch some d-bags, or going for a good party, i wouldn't bother. I became all 'clubbed'-out after my internship junior year, and after hittin all the 'hotspots' at the time.

A few others you could include are G-Spa, SoHo House (never been), Milk & HoneY (more a bar than a club). Cain's list girl is a frigid bitch but what can you do.

For restaurants - waverly inn is a little tougher to get a reservation for, as is Rao's in the Bronx.

3/25/18

Anyone who thinks mega night clubs like pacha, marquee, and cain, are "exclusive," have no idea what they are talking about. The latter two have not been hot since 2006.

1OAK was amazing in the first six months it was open, but it has really gone downhill. Still a decent place to go once in a while.

Rose Bar is still very exclusive and never fails to disappoint.

3/25/18

Listen to HerSerendipity--she's definitely on point.

Soho House, you can't even get into unless you are a member or member's guest.

3/25/18

The original posters have got to be kidding...

Pacha? One of the most exclusive clubs? Pacha is the least exclusive club... People in high school go there... It is an incredibly large and thus very easy to get into club.

Similarly, Tao is most definitely not one of the most exclusive restaurants in NYC...

I'd argue that One Oak is easily one of the most difficult clubs in NYC to get into. Tenjune can be difficult as well for some folks.

3/25/18

stay away from 230th on 5th and ganservoort. By the way Tao sucks and is overrated.

3/25/18
dipset1011:

I could not agree more. 230 fifth avenue is the go-to spot for the guidos and annoying banking interns who think they're cool.

Tao is mediocre, but at least they have a decent amount of hotties.

3/25/18

The Gates is new and fun, somewhat of a random crowd though. Went to the opening party last night - super-exclusive, need a key type of place. Kind of like Bungalow in the '90s.

1Oak is always a good time, tons of models and celebrities - but Binn is a notorious for turning people away.

My personal fav is The Eldridge, it is super small, so not a ton of people, and Matt (Levine) does not rely mainly on bottle service for his revenue so it is somewhat difficult to "buy your way in". Hence, not a ton of banker types, more of an LES crowd.

Georgica in the Hamptons this year should be good too, opening party tomorrow night.

3/25/18

I was at the Gates party as well last night. Had a good time.

I feel like 1OAK has gotten less selective recently. But of course, that's just my opinion.

Eldridge is good, but not really my crowd.

I'm a huge fan of rose bar, especially on friday nights. Upstairs at downtown cipriani is great as well, but it's not a club. More of an exclusive restaurant/lounge.

3/25/18

ive done the M&H many times and thus walked by the eldridge on my way home etc.

if you feel kind, pm me with realistic/non d-bag info on getting in?

3/25/18

If you need to ask...

Seriously, after a few months you have little interest in the club scene - unless you're hitting a model spot at 1 on a Tuesday night.

On the restaurant front, I'm somewhat interested in DB's new place in Bowery, DBGB. Not particularly expensive but seems like an interesting place.

Also most of the restaurants listed above are pretty overrated (Buddha Bar? give me a break...) Try Blue Ribbon in SoHo for a better meal. Hell, I'd rather go to Black Iron over most of the places above. The basement at Peasant is probably the most fun dinner if you're fine with meat, cheese and wine.

There are also a lot of great "spectacle" restaurants in the city if you want some good dinner conversation. Wd-50 for all its flaws is still good to take an out of towner, and Ninja is always good for a laugh.

3/25/18

Oh, and Sammy's Roumanian in LES. Nothing like some Ketel One in a block of ice, some chopped liver and a Romanian tenderloin with the drunk grandmother at the next table squirting you with seltzer.

3/25/18

Ditto on BlueRibbon.

I figured someone would eventually comment on the Marquee/Cain/Tao being thrown around by 19 year olds from Wichita.

im happy to say that i've never been to any of these places

I clicked on this expecting the list to be the Knick, The Racquet, the Brook, the Union, etc.

Nightclubs exclusivity is basically how much are you willing to pay. That's about it. You want to book a table with a 3k minimum at a hot spot, they're happy to take your money.

No offence but anyone looking into exclusivity clubs is either:

b- neuvo rich certified dbag.

It is easy to bag insecure hottie freebies all over the city during early evening. Maybe nyc has changed a lot in the last few yrs.
