OTPP reputation

Hi guys:

I'm curious if you've came across OTPP in the past please. Are they good investors? How are they regarded in the market in terms of investment rigor and investment judgement? I understand that in Canada, most PE firms are pensions, Onex, middle market; but how do these pensions differ from a standalone US PE fund in terms of rigor, deal source, and deal quality? Thanks!

OTTP works the same as CPDQ (Quebec pension fund) and they have aprox the same AuM size. Basically, they are dealing with middle class Joe's money and won't conduct any risky LBO or investment of anykind. Those Canadian "megafunds" invest in almost all asset classes but are super conservative. Most of the time, PE groups of pension funds co-invest with a lead financial sponsor (think KKR, Apollo, etc.), providing them with a smaller amount of equity in exchange of a stable return.

They are looking for more or less long term investment (such as infrastructures).

In term of hours, it really depends on the groups and dealflow. I know that the Fixed Income and Equity guys at CPPIB and OTPP are almost the 8-5 type. You will be working more in a private market group, especially on live deals.

Let me know if I'm not clear enough
