Part time junior analyst opportunity. Need help!
I just received a call from an analyst working at a well known boutique TMT M&A firm for an interview, having applied months ago. It goes under the guise of 'part time junior analyst', which I'm assuming means intern (I'm still at uni anyways so it's all good).
Having had a closer look at the firm, they've had some pretty big deals over the past few years. And the team all come from BB IBs and the like.
My problem with all this is, well, I don't think I'll get it. I do attend a strong target but my GPA is complete dogshit (add some fails on the transcript too for good measure). However, my ECs and work experience are pretty much outstanding (6 month internship in a VC firm, 4 month internship at a boutique IB, work experience at a top fund, co-started a fund, own a business etc.). Obviously, that's the only thing that's saving my ass at the moment.
So my question is, how can I address the fact that I've got a crap GPA and have them focus on my work experience? They've asked me to bring in some material I've previously worked on, which I'm hoping should show them my level of skill, but I'm afraid the fact that I'm not so strong with academics will hurt me.
Any advice is appreciated. I really, really, could use this experience. It could be my big break as there is a chance they'll take me on full time (checked the analyst that called me's LinkedIn, and he was part time there before coming on full time).
Say you learned your lesson, and tell a story that proves you are smart and hardworking.
You've already made it to the interview stage which presumably means they would be willing to overlook the GPA. While it isn't a great reflection of your work ethic, if you can come up with a story to at least somewhat explain the fault and show how you're working to turn it around (are your fall semester grades better than the overall GPA?). You have great work experience and in reality that is more important, speak heavily to that and emphasize your successes there and how they can relate to the junior analyst role. Don't count yourself out - if they really thought your GPA was that big of an issue they would waste their time with an interview. Good luck!
