Post-MBA Restructuring Recruiting
Does Columbia Business School place well into post-MBA IB restructuring roles? I will have spent two years in O&G IB, two years in O&G PE, and will be matriculating at CBS in the fall of 2019 (Class of 2021). Appreciate the color. CBS's employment report doesn't break out different IB roles that its students successfully land.
LordGeoff, hey, look at the bright side, at least you didn't get a ton of monkey shit thrown at you...here is my best guess on threads that might be helpful:
If we're lucky, the following users may have something to say: adrianykw mdsnyc Chi_001
Hope that helps.
Dang, how did you already get accepted?
Contact the IB club on campus and I'm sure they can tell you.
Applied ED towards the end of July. CBS promises a quick turnaround on applications. Total process length was approximately 6 weeks from clicking submit to final decision (including interview).
Good call on reaching out to the IB group. I will check there next!
A few restructuring shops (HL, GH) recruit on campus but most only hire 1 - 2 for the summer. The larger EBs with restructuring all feature it as well, but again, most are looking to hire only 1 for the summer. Look into the Restructuring and Distressed Investing club.
Thank you. I appreciate the advice. Sounds like the number of associates hired for restructuring are very low. Would you imagine that it is harder to do restructuring IB than it is getting into PE?
That's completely dependent on prior experience. If you have the experience PE funds are looking for, then there are most likely more opportunities there, if not, this question is moot.
I guess I'm not really sure why you'd do this? You've already done your analyst stint - it's not like you need an entry to IB. Seems like a step down from PE associate to IB Associate. Would you be gunning for VP?
Are you able to break back into banking as an experienced hire and skip the three years of associate? I was under the impression that everyone that heads back to banking is an Associate I again. Can people jump in as A-II / A-III or VP?
I don't know all that much about the ins and outs of MBA recruiting, but I do know that you could have theoretically gotten promoted to associate after your analyst years 2 years ago. So you're stepping backwards, no?
No, I don’t know of any reputable bank that will let you skip your associate years post-MBA. There’s a guy in my class who did 2 years as an analyst at a top BB, a couple years of PE, business school, and is now starting as a first year post-MBA associate like the rest of us.
I have a feeling you could apply at least for associate roles now (through headhunters or referral for lateral) and get brought in as at least Associate 1 in a reputable firm - assuming you worked at a decent bank. Qualified associates are in a shortage and people would quickly pick you up. If you don’t want people to pay you a full year in bonus you can probably do that right now or wait until front end of next year. Too late in the cycle for guarantee / full year bonus.
Will save you few years and $. Note that this applies to regular IB roles - idk how restructuring would vary. But worth trying while you are waiting to start MBA.
