Private Equity Dissertation - Good topics?

Hi guys,

What do you think are good Private Equity dissertation topics?

I would have been extremely interested in something like "What value is left in secondary buyouts", but obviously access to data would probably prove to be extremely difficult.

Another topic i thought of was "Are positive debt incentives on management stronger in highly-leveraged buyouts?" or something along those lines.

Does anyone have other suggestions of interesting PE questions / aspects? Especially the PE guys out here, is there a particular question you have asked yourself and that you think would be interesting to tackle academically?

Thanks !

A thorough piece of research would be to identify the correlations in PE performance relative to broader equity and debt markets.

good idea

How about carry interest and the effect that it has created in risk taking, and the steps investors are taking to limit that extreme risk taking?- since PE funds can only participate on upside, they're willing to take huge risks. Knowing the effect, investors usually demand the general partners to put money in their own PE funds, but I noticed over the past few years a lot of the general partners do it in the form of a fee waiver- instead of putting in actual cash, they waive some management fees, and call the waived fee their own capital. Also, some GPs borrow money from their own very PE fund to put money in as their own capital... does fee waiver or debt financing from the PE fund itself reduce the effect of extreme risk taking? I've been wondering about it (oh and btw, I know investors don't like it, but they've been tolerating it).

1) I would send you the final product 2) You would be helping someone who has a genuine interest in your industry 3) You get to do something else than your traditional daily routine for 30 min

Certain PE fund sponsors are better known for emphasizing heavy operational restructuring in their value proposition. I know KPS Capital Partners and a breakaway firm called Monomoy fall in this category. There was a good article featuring Monomoy in a recent issue of Bloomberg's Business Week: http://www.businessweek.com/articles/2012-04-26/my-week-at-private-equi…

Another avenue you might consider (not sure if this will help your dissertation or overcomplicate it) is how the major LPs (pensions, endowments, etc.) view various sponsors, and to what extent the importance of a sponsor's perceived "operational ability" has increased over time. Fundraising has been very competitive in the latest cycle, and I think you will find that LPs are focused on committing capital to funds they see as having an operational edge. This is also likely reflected in the terms governing leverage limits and other fund terms in the latest partnership agreements.

This is certainly case in the world of real estate private equity fundraising, and I imagine the same holds in the world of corporate buyouts as well.

What a great project! Please put me on your distrubition list.

In my opinion, the only resource to learn about the evolution of due diligence or essentially anything about the leading edge of due diligence, is the Association of Due Diligence Professionals. And you should really try to talk to the CEO, Charles Bacon. I've never found anybody close to his level of knowledge and experience in due diligence, and his contributions to the field are amazing.

Disclaimer: I do not speak for this association or this person. I am a member of the association, and I did take the association's course for the Certified Due Diligence Professional credential. I was very lucky that he was my teacher. If you can get to talk with him, I think that you could learn more from him in a few minutes than countless hours of research.

Let me know if I can help further.

so you want someone to do all your work for you? You could have gotten a large % of your paper, if you simply asked leading questions on here...and then just added some fluff(examples etc)...but giving you a disseration to plagiarize? I sincerly doubt you'll have any volunteers.
