Career Resources
There are probably 30 energy related PE firms. Too many to list, just do some research.
I've heard Riverstone isn't what it used to be. Obviously, all the funds suffered in the oil downturn.
EnerVest is really doing well these days

Could people weigh in on what the most sought-after PE exits are for people in top energy banking groups or people interested in this area. List could include both energy-focused firms and large diversified funds that are active in energy. Bonus points if you rank your top 5-10 or so. Thanks
bump
I'll just name some: Warburg Pincus, First Reserve. I know Carlyle has an energy subfund. Evercore has some E&P holdings. HM Capital. Hick's new fund, Hicks Holdings, also does some energy. The ones listed above are mostly Oil and Gas. Know nothing about Power.
Thanks breakthrough
Riverstone is a top pure energy PE fund.
Riverstone, AIG Highstar as well
Natural Gas Partners has averaged a 37% return over 17 years and also gotten every analyst/associate they have had into SBS, HBS, or Wharton. I have a father in the oil business and this will be his top choice of an equity backer if ever necessary.
what school is SBS?
first reserve
Seriously? You can't figure that out with two minutes of thinking, or looking at a list of top B-Schools?
Arclight - that's power though
All the biggest energy deals I've seen lately have been First Reserve. They are huge.
What is the outlook going forward for these firms? Any other major players?
first reserve seems to be the most dominant one. they have been raising a ton of capital and did a substantial amount of LBO activity during 2007/2008
their website lists all their professional employees and its a really big team. it seems like they are a pretty stable company, with a good capital base and talent.
Most of the big firms will be okay. While commodity prices have certainly cooled, firms that have capital will be buying up assets at nice discounts.
I think all the big firms were mentioned in this thread.
EIF, Energy Capital are also power/energy focused.

How different is a private equity fund specialized in energy from traditional PE funds? Do you use LBO as well? Do you value companies based on NAV with exploration, production and marketing parts? How does it work and what are your thoughts on that? Thanks
