Private Equity Training
Hi all, first-time poster who just found this site. Looks to be a great source of info.
I wanted to see if anyone has any great ideas for PE training resources.
I'm out of undergrad and will be starting as an analyst at a PE firm based in Mumbai, India in the next few months. I'm a non-finance/business major and don't have a ton of modeling experience. I've heard of some different resources--Training the Street, Wall Street Training, etc, and was wondering if anyone can recommend those or any other programs out there.
Also, I've heard that the McKinsey valuation guide should basically be memorized...any comments on that? Or any other books/programs that might be helpful.
Any input would be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance.
Wall Street Prep is also a program I've been considering, in case anyone might have ideas on that...
Best prep for PE job (Originally Posted: 04/25/2013)
Hey guys - i would appreciate your advice on best ways to prepare/exceed at pe job? Im currently in a small pe fund but things are quiet (was in i banking before with no free time) - i want to use my spare time to prep better for the job. Which books / courses / (anything else?) would you suggest?
Cheers
You should sign up for a modeling course - check out BIWS there's PE case studies. There's a blog on the latest Dell LBO -- you should be comfortable reading up on that LBO before going into your interviews.
Are you moving to a new PE firm or staying at the current firm? Practicing modelling as the above poster said, getting familiar with credit agreements and legal docs associated with LBOs, understanding the different types of debt used in LBOs (first lien, mezz, etc). If you want to get familiar with how the GP/LP relationship works or fund structures, there are books out there.
Forgot to mention CFA may be an option, but isn't as prevalent in PE/IB
Still pretty boss: "I worked 100 hour weeks AND studied for the CFA, a 300 hr requirement per exam"
I am CFA already! And dont get me wrong, i am not sure it is the best way to progress in PE - more asset mgmt or HF. In terms of modelling and learning more about documentation or dd issues is def a good recommendation, but are there good books on those things? Modelling - is Wall street adv LBO better than BIWS? Thanks a lot for all yor answers!
You're "CFA" already? I'm pretty sure the first thing they drill into you is that "CFA" is not a noun - you're a "CFA charterholder", not a "CFA."
There are some solid books on DD and documentation in general. The Art of M&A : A Merger Acquisition Buyout Guide, Mergers and Acquisitions: A Step-by-Step Legal and Practical Guide, Checklists for Due Diligence, etc.
thanks Zen Monkey! I bought M&A step by step legal guide lasy yr but only read two chapters. Need to fight the laziness!!
