Professors wont excuse superdays
How do you guys handle superdays with your professors? Mine have an attendance policy thats 40% of this class and they don’t excuse recruitment related absences. They also have a mandatory ‘for every absence above X amount you lose a letter grade.’ I tried to meet with them and they suggest I check the syllabus and there is nothing they can do.
I’m literally going to fail because this is a 3 day a week class and any super day means I have to miss.
What's more important long-term: your grade in this class or attending the Super Day? Therein lies the answer to your situation.
Thats why I have been missing. But if I fail the the class and have to delay graduation then won’t have a job either.
Take it up with your academic counselor or the ombudsmen. The whole point of undergrad is to get a job, and this professor is standing in your way.
They have a policy where there are no ‘excused’ or ‘unexcused’ absences. So you are allowed to miss a certain number of days (but you cant make up the 40% missed from in class participation). Hence why he told me it wont matter since ‘excused’ isnt a thing in his class, he just takes points off your grade
But yes im going to meet with my academic counseller though
what school and what professor, oust him
I actually feel really bad for you; I’ve had to miss two classes this semester already for a once-a-week seminar class, and both absences were excused. You can bring up your situation to the chairman of your department or the dean if you’re very worried about failing! They generally have authority over professors
Late drop the class?
Then I don’t graduate
How many excused absences do you get? Also how many super days are you attending? Surely you aren't attending enough superdays to miss your allowed absences AND to drop you enough letter grades to fail? Not trying to be critical maybe I'm reading it wrong, also if you have that many superdays congrats!
That's what I was thinking too. How many superdays do you have where you use up all your absences up to the threshold where he starts dropping your letter grade? Something doesn't add up. Maybe OP skipped a lot of class previously and can't afford to skip one more; if so, that's on him/her.
I’m at 8 superdays
Fulltime recruiting blows when they interview 30 people for 1 position
Go to the dean ASAP
Yes. This is what you need to do.
The dean knows your superday and potential offer makes his program look way better than attendance on a random Tuesday. Go over this dick professors head and make sure you include that you have tried to be accommodating and this professor just said "check the syllabus."
I ended up getting an offer last week. He told me he will just make my tests count as my final grade as clearly it was worth missing class for
This. TAKE IT UP THE CHAIN. Go to the Dean, argue it, appeal it, go all out. A superday is not a date or time you should move. If you're interviewing at my bank (PM me to check) I'll even make a call to someone at your school to explain how important it is to attend.
Happened to me last semester, honestly not much you can do. Attendance weight for my class wasnt as heavy as yours, but it caused me to get a B.
This sounds like the Ivey Business School. Not sure how those kids do so well in recruiting while having such a stupid attendance policy
Promise you OP is a lib arts major. Stupid stuff like this wouldn't happen in the business college. "Look at the syllabus." Give me a break. This is where your taxpayer dollars are going.
ok
Please stop posting
Gotta negotiate terms and agreements with your professors. Policy regarding attendance is tied down, but explain the situation of the importance of the superday to them.
Worse comes to worse, kiss a lot of a** to the professors so they would be lenient in letting you off a day or two to attend these. You learn real well how to negotiate and deal this way, too.
As others have said, go talk to the dean. If they blow you off talk to their boss. Who cares if you’re “that guy” making a big deal of it? Your life is a big deal. The impact this has on your life is disproportionate than the impact it has on their lives.
I had a professor like this and I raised hell and got an A. Not superdays (didn’t go to IB) but still work related stuff.
Go to the dean - this wanker of a professor clearly just needs a reason to feel tough / flex his authority, and has no regard for your future. Put him in his place and remind him who's boss
My Econ professor: “Interviews are not an excused absence. You don’t have to go to an interview; you’re choosing to. However, economics is all about trade offs and I’m sure you can decide if 1% off your grade in one of the many classes you’ll take here is worth getting a job.”
Damn that's a pretty good argument lol
True, but in that case the econ professor has full discretion over what those trade-off's are. If he said it was half a letter grade off as in the OP's case, then he would be actively discouraging his students from getting a job.
Almost as if he was trying to make it worth it to NOT get a job
Jesus I went to a hardcore liberal arts school and didn't have this issue with my profs. What fucking school is this? Def take it to the dean.
"Dear Dr. X
I am sorry a cannot make it to your class. My future goals are to be a jetset big swinging dick managing director making 1 million dollars a year at a Bulge Bracket bank. For this I must go to the superday for Goldman Sachs
Thank You'
I would have used that but unfortunately I didn't get to superday for Goldman Sachs. The same can't be said for all bulge brackets.
I'm just envisioning my professor responding to my email 'you're missing my class for a damned Deutsche Bank superday?' and getting failed on the spot.
Go to a doctor and get a sick note?
Otherwise, how do they take roll. sIgn in sheet, clicker? Pay some dude $100 to go and pretend to be you and sit there for an hour if you can't have a friend sign you in.
Is this Ivey essentials?
The arrogance and stupidity of these professors... They have no clue how the world works because they never had to compete for anything.
If you are at a business school, this is ridiculous. For my classes, I don't have a problem authorizing absences for recruitment conflicts, even for exams. If your prof is being a jerk you can do the following, in increasing order of aggressiveness: 1) Petition the prof in a group to change his policy; 2) Complain in a group to the dept. chair/head of placement office; 3) Mount a full blown student mutiny/class boycott with manifestos, picket signs, coverage by the student newspaper, etc. In cases like these, group protests work.
OCR is obviously useless if you have to trash your GPA to try to take advantage of it.
That’s really tough. I was in a similar situation with one of my fine arts teachers. Most of my other professors were former bankers, traders, etc. and we’re super excited about my superdays. But my fine arts film teacher threw a fit. I ended up appealing it to dean of the honors college and it all worked out ... besides the fact the my film teacher wouldn’t look at me for the rest of the semester.
That's what I like to hear lol professor got owned by the dean.
Hate to be the devil's advocate here, but if you have let's say a 12 week semester, class meets 3 times a week = 36 times a semester, and you have 8 superdays, meaning that you could attend a maximum of 24. That's 66% attendance, and above the 40% absentee threshold. Are you telling us the full story here? It seems to me you've used your days up outside of the superdays... Also, attending 8 superdays...
Otherwise, go to the Dean.
