Satellite IB to London HF

Hi all,

Currently a second year IB analyst at a BB in Australia, seeking to move to a London L/S HF (preferably SM) in 2023.

Looking to politely tap the WSO UK HF community for guidance on some questions I have:

  1. I have 18-24 months before I want to start my HF role. To maximise my HF candidacy during this interim period, am I better off:(a) staying in IB (getting solid modelling exp atm) and making the move when I'm an associate;(b) moving to PE this year; or(c) running at an Aussie HF seat this year (likely no familiarity at London HFs);
  2. How much will the lack of a London network impact my chances? Open to solutions
  3. When making the move to a HF in my 3rd / 4th year, will my experience by recognised or will I join a cohort of people in their 2nd year?
  4. Is setting up international sponsorship an issue for SM funds? Assume MM is fine.
  5. Are virtual interviews acceptable? Or will I have to move to London with another job / without a job before I can interview?

Appreciate any and all responses. Thanks!

Oz-Medici, bummer your thread hasn't had a response yet. Maybe one of these threads could point you in the right direction:

Hey man,

I can’t actually answer any of your questions about the specifics as I am at a similar stage to you (although already based on London). What I can say is that all interviews so far for myself and my friends have been virtual, although none of these have been for HF have all been for PE/IB.

Best of luck!

b for visibility. something I'd say here is from my experience WSO isn't too common in the uk. very us-centric and your ability to find a uk guy who knows his shit about what you're looking for may be limited. good luck anyway.
