Small Hedge Fund (20-50m AUM) or Bulge Bracket Bank?
I am looking at 2019 internship opportunities as a junior. I am currently working at a startup hedge fund, however am looking at opportunities at bulge bracket firms as well.
Do you have any advice between staying at a small, entrepreneurial hedge fund in which you are able to tangibly affect the businesses's day to day operations, relative to taking an opportunity at a bulge bracket firm? I have subsidized several strategies utilized within the firm, and also generated research. Is it a bad career decision to start my career at a small hedge fund? Or will I still have opportunities if I decide to leave/if it fails?
I view the trade offs as:
- Worse work life balance at Bulge Brackets
- More established brand on resume at BBs
- Opportunity to learn and develop in both environments, however they are different
- Easier time finding exit opportunities out of a BB (or am I mistaken?)
Any thoughts/advice would be appreciated.
Hey man, I'm also completing an internship at a small HF. I think the technical skill set you learn as an analyst on Wall Street would be the reason you want to go into IB- probably be best even if you are thinking HF long-term.
You don't learn much of use at a bank. The reason to do banking is that (assumign its a good bank) the name might open up opportunities that are better than the small fund

Hi imaginedat, whoops, looks like nobody chimed in here.... maybe one of these discussions below is relevant:

Depends how much AUM the HF has.
say 1 billion
Well I don't know the details of your two offers but I would probably choose the BB simply because of the relative job security it offers. A 1 billion fund can disappear very quickly if things go bad (also depends on how much of the AUM is from managers and how much is from outside investors) but your earnings potential, if things do well, is most likely higher than at the BB. I'm currently working at a relatively small fund and if I was given a similar job at a BB I think I would take it (brand name, get to meet more people, probably still have a job in a year, etc.) If we were talking about a 10 billion fund with 50 or so people then I would definitely go there.
