So cray - Ambiguous purpose of phone call

So I emailed my resume to a small boutique MD to apply for an analyst spot. He emailed back and asked how I found him, I then explained I saw a job ad then found his address on the firm's website, he then said he was not aware of the ad but would be glad to take a look (whatever that even means? he was vague...) but he was traveling that week so I got back with him later...

Well, he took on a networking tone from the get-go, all over email so far, and he used phrases like "Swagon, what you'll discover on the street is...XYZ funny factoid."

He was traveling when he got my initial application so my fear is he may have skimmed it and thought it was a networking request, despite it explicitly being a pure application including typical phrases like "i'm emailing to apply for...would like to work for XYZ because...hope you'll consider me."

How do I start off and handle the conversation when I call at the time we set up? Should I hedge my bets and network, since he's been EXTREMEEEELY friendly so far? Or go for the jugular with all my gucci swag? Can I have my networking cake and apply to it too?

also in b4 someone talks like swagon normally does

actuallly you weren't

I didn't say it was your fault, I said I was blaming you.

While he seems to think you're networking, seems strange that he'd be so nice to a complete stranger unless he was considering your candidacy.

True...but I made a great initial impression...but then again if he actually read that initial impression (my application), there's no way he would have misinterpreted it...hmmm...this be so cray I just donno mane.

The boutique is small and unpreftijus enough that he probably doesn't get many people reaching out, so that probably helped me in either case.

He alluded to the job ad (may have even explicitly mentioned or addressed it, I can't recall) so I really think he knows I applied...I'm just gonna go with that and keep it gucci.

The "I didnt know we had a job ad..." happens all the time. I have people message me to take down job posts then the next day have them back up because they were mistaken or forgot.

Good luck swag!

hmmm...very very cray, but I is confoosed; are you saying a company thought there was a job ad up erroneously, so they asked you take it down...but then that person realized they were mistaken and that their company is, in fact, hiring, so they asked you to put the ad back up?

Very normal, sometime happen with ma dad. He let me network with him via email whenever possible, he interview me and then offer the job. But sometime he just can't do it, its a really tough world out there ya know... He just can't do this.

Yeah recent example - An MD had an analyst post a job here. Another MD finds it and is like wtf, we have to take the post down. Hours later we put it back up after they finally talk to each other.

Happens all the time.
