Sophomore Summer Internship..too late?

Hi Everyone ,
I am a current sophomore at a non-target school majoring in finance and economics and currently have a 3.7 GPA. I aspire to have a career in IB and understand how essential it is to have a sophomore internship under your belt for SA roles.

However, throughout the year, I have been struggling to find an internship for this summer. I am sort of new to this and would really love to know what I could do at this point to better my chances to find something for this summer. I don’t mind if it’s paid or not.

Any advice is deeply appreciated, Thank you!

I wouldn’t worry too much about this, it’s not too late. The main internship is the junior year one and obtaining a BB/EB during sophomore year is incredibly difficult as most programs are designed for diversity. With that being said, look towards boutique or even some MM investment banks. Reach out to boutiques that have senior members from your university or are near your hometown/university. Let me know if you have any other questions and best of luck with your search!

Many boutiques keep their employees' emails on their websites, so you could try to find this. However, you can also message them on LinkedIn if you cannot find their email. Another strategy that you could undertake is directly emailing boutiques' hr or careers team asking if they have an opportunity available. This is also a great opportunity to attach your resume in the email to hopefully impress them. I think both work but I generally email as you can show your resume as well then.

I was in a similar situation when I rounded out my winter quarter of sophomore year. Got rejected by all of the BB/MM's I applied to.

I'm working full-time at a Silicon Valley VC during my gap and got my role by networking.

Set aside 2-6 hours a day and create meaningful connections with the people you talk to. Make sure you stay sharp on GAAP principles and financial modeling; these are the only metrics available to test your intelligence and demonstrate your commitment to the role at this level.
